bcomm cut-off at mac (1 Viewer)

Strange. Why do you want the cutoff so high? and if you said 90 is low I think it is absurd. Other universities have CA/CPA accreditation too for its accounting course. In mac uni, only bachelor commerce in actuarial study who has very high UAI. Mac uni is well known for "easy to get in and hard to come out" i guess.
i would say that macq uni offers more b.commerce places which results in the lower uai cut off!! but thats just based on imagination and not any real fact.. LOL
aditya, i take it you are one of those 99.9 students who is looking down on macq uni??

but im pretty confident i can get 90, i do work hard, and im not stupid or anything.. so 90 is pretty achievable???
so if u wanna stop judging me and just answer the questionw ould be good (directed at the guy going to wollongong).
the reason this question arised in my mind was because i think mac offers a pretty good case, but its soooooo much lower COMPAREITVELY... (i apologise for my wording b4), UNSw 96, USYD 95... and the shocking one, uts... who doesnt even offer CA/CPA accreditation??? is like 92...
so i was just curious.... i thought about the location issue, i mean id much rather be surrounded by 3 unis than just one "isolated" one... hehe much more oppourtunity to socialise and shit...
but unless an educational reason forbids, i would prefer to go mac over UTS... mebe not the two biggies, but over UTS anyday...

the cut-off is determined by the number of places offered. for eg if there are a 100 places offered, the people accepted would be...
1. 100.00
2. 99.80
3. 99.75
...
...
99. 97.45
100. 75.80
the cut-off for that course would be 75.80, since that was the lowest uai in the top 100 people that applied. it shows how the cut-off might not be an exact replica of the canditure of the students or the toughness of the course.
also, as someone mentioned before, MQ might offer a lot of places, say 200 in the example above. then, the cut-off would be reduced.

in my opinion, i think macquarie offers a greater number of spaces in their b.commerce degree. the b.commerce degree is regarded as a generalist degree at macq uni like b. science or b. arts. the other uni's only have 2 generalist degrees, these being arts and science.
as for what flyin' is on about, actuarial studies is what macquarie is the BEST in... only 1 other uni offers it, that uni being unsw. its one of those really intensive degrees which requires a cut off of 97.25, which is the highest cut off for a b.commerce degree beating usyd/unsw/uts....
as for another factor that would slightly contribute to the lower cut off is the location, as already mentioned. oh if you think that being located in the city allows for more intra-uni 'socialising', your wrong. i went to usyd last year and there really isn't that many activities that happens between the uni's, except maybe rallies of some sort!!

yes the uai cut offs are based on demand and supply, but there is also a minimum standard which the uni's don't publish.... take for example law, say there was a loss of demand of law at usyd and that they had 50 spots to fill and only 50 people applied... say also that the lowest UAI of that group of 50 was 75%. now the people at usyd admissions won't give that person an offer because of his/her's lower uai. they have to keep a minimum standard and in saying that they don't believe that a person with a uai of (this is just a guess but..) anything below 95 is capable of the low workload.

Yes. Also, if you want to try Actuarial at Macq, you will need a decent UAI and even then, there are no guarentees you'll get out with AIAA.

mq is poor..
other unis have more industry scholarships
unsw and usyd have rich departments and they're powerful marketing machines. ppl like to join popular groups, not the quiet ones. even tho the quiets ones may be dark horses, they aren't discovered and realised by most ppl.
