Does anyone else have an issue with government funding being used for this like it said in the first article... surely the church is rich enough to pay for their own propaganda fest.

Overseas pilgrims are expected to number about 85,000, slightly fewer than the 100,000 visitors who flocked to the 2000 Games but about twice that for a Commonwealth Games.

Alot of girls i've known that hang out at these hip churches are total sluts, they like pick up guys at church. I'd never seen a hillsong church before, so I was imagining your more traditional church and was like "wtf".
Picking up at church? Heck yeah - at least you know they're noice Christian fellas... I heard someone saying once 'the music shouldn't be too rock-y, otherwise I feel like I'm jumping to the music and not to God...'

Yeah I know it's great to get tourists yadda yadda.... BUT the church is more than wealthy enough to pay for most of this themselves, our state govt shouldn't be forking out tons of money for them, they should sit back and enjoy the ride....

Like obviously some costs are inevitable (e.g. more public transport to places the events are at blah blah) but the church should have to pay for the rest.... according to http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/and-the-popes-winner-is-syderney/2005/08/21/1124562750366.html the state govt is spending 20 mil and the fed govt is spending 20 mil, so the Australian taxpayers are paying for half of the cost of this catholic propaganda festival.

I read in the SMH, and then heard again on 7 news that this event will bring in only slightly less money than the Olympics.

That being said, I'm going. I like to hear about religion, and although Catholicism in general (and specific) is fucked, the week's about tolerance et al.

Also, I sat on the Dalai Lama's knee when I was little and got a blessing kiss on the head- maybe I'll get to kiss the pope's ring. That gagging metaphor rings loud and far, IMO, the Dalai Lama kisses people's heads, whereas people kneel down and give the pope a spiritual blow job by kissing his ring.

I'm going to laugh if there's a mini-baby boom 9 months on from the festival.

Carr is a catholic but thank god he's gone from the office of premier now.

The Vatican has enough money, enough art and enough resources to end world poverty but they don't. They have millions of dollars worth of art.

That's another reason why you never donate to a catholic charity.
...why would art be a resource to end world poverty? you don't make sense, it's just an exchange of resources from rich to rich.

if everyone gave like 1% of their bank account from industrialised countries to the poor there'd be like enough money to feed the poor countries for like a century.

the richest 1% of the world own like 60% of the world's collective 'wealth'. which means the rest of the world uses only 40% of the world's wealth. this gets exponentially worse as you move down the wealth ladder.

yes, they vatican are tightasses with huge wallets so what? they are nothing compared to the big guns. they are not anymore tightass than western society. eg. live 8 is a fancy futile attempt to make ourselves feel less guilty, a prime example that most charity work conducted in western society is useless.

ps. carr is only not really a catholic. he says it to secure votes. arguably like every other catholic. deeds to secure 'votes' from God...lol.

This argument always pops up. but think of it this way:
thousands (even millions) of tourists travel every year to the Vatican. Whilst they are there they go on tours run by the church. Each person pays for this tour. So if u look at the money that the church makes from letting millions see the paintings every year (year after year after year), compared to the amount they would get for selling the paintings at todays going rate then the church actually gets much more from these tours. Also, if they were to sell them, then only the super-rich could afford them. the paintings would then be put up on the walls of peoples mansions where only they could see them. Also, these paintings are in a position of great security and safe keeping which ensures their logevity. If they were sold then there is an increased chance of them being lost for ever (ie: stolen or destroyed by event such as fire) because of reduced security.

Furthermore, the church prefers to educate people in the third world, rather than just giving them money they dont know how to use.

So in conclusion i would like to say this: Catholic charities are just as valid as any other charity. So how dare u throw ur propaganda in front of people telling them about situations u are too narrow minded to understand! keep donating people, not just to Catholic charities but all charities: because all charity work is invaluable.

I'm going. One, I'm a Catholic. Two, you don't see the Pope everyday (unless you live in Vatican - but I'll refrain from that).

One thing is that It's gonna be a rock concert... which I hate, loud music and all.

Of all the things the Church hasn't been conservative on.... :(

Yes, as for the money thing, it's true that the Catholic Church had been corrupt in the past. But I think there's nothing wrong with donating money through the Catholic Church today. It's as valid as any other charity, as someone already mentioned.

As for those wanting to run for the hills, didn't the Germans have a special accommodation for them back in Cologne? Something like that?

Besides, why run when you can throw eggs at us? It's a one-time opportunity! So much targets, so many satisfactions, all in a week's work!

I want to go but how am I going to deal with 80,000 people like 'kangaroo'? At least if I shove them around 'accidentally' they say sorry instead of the other way around. :p

what i find amusing is that a lot of young people who complain about having their taxes fund things that they don't support are often people who complain bitterly about the idea of VSU. not braindrainedAsh in particular, just in general.

make the choice....do you support the idea of a rich, culturally diverse society whether or not you agree with all aspects, or do you want a user-pay society in which you only support what you specifically agree with?

as for the church, i don't think it's rolling in dough...but the government will support this like it would support any other big event that brings thousands of tourists to australia. seriously, not a big deal!!

I'd like to go for the spectacle of it. Should be freaking huge. I dont see why he cant whip around the world in a few months right now though - bleeding Nazi. I saw Charley boy when he was in Canberra too (with my tacky socialist brother). Did I mention that? We made eye contact. Eye contact with the future King. I even believe he nodded and mumbled "Yes indeed" in his fumbling incoherent way.

I don't think its such a bad idea... I am just curious...I just want to see a large groupe of people destroying the streets of sydney... Oh the bliss... I have doubts.. I would have definatly gone if it was John Paul II!!

I am in Poland atm...And here my friends, there are no hills to run to.. I came to the country as a catholic, and I am leaving as an Athiest... the country is screwed up in its religious views...

Did you know they banned Tellytubbies because Tinkywinky walks around with a bag...the claimed it "prevokes homosexual tendiences in 3 yr olds..." Work that one out...
