Best file compresser? (1 Viewer)

Currently im am looking for the best possible program to compress a large file to a much smaller one. I tried winrar it was decent 3gigs to 1.2gigs. i was wondering if there is a program that would compress 4gigs to say about 500meg.

It really depends on the file... it may not be -possible- to compress it more than that.

Try BZip2. If that doesn't work then there's probably not much smaller you can make it.

this post probably isnt of too much help, but IIRC theres was a certain dos program used to compress a rip of Brothers In Arms from 3.6Gigs to, i think it was, about 1.2Gigs.

took a hell of a long time to extract though, its probably more convenient to just use winrar and maybe just buy a few dvds for burning if youre really desperate.

That file compressor which takes a long time to compress and extract could be 7zip or that other one where they had a floppy sized MS office 2004 but.. they DO take hours/days on end to compress that small and extract well...

For the original poster, depends on what you're trying to compress. Getting better than 50% compression is pretty good for most files.

Try an UHA format, it's good for archiving but the archived files are in sequential order. Extracting 1 or 2 files may take a while as the extractor shifts through the whole archive to find them.

rar isn't quite the best compressor in terms of compression ratio, but it is fast.
