Help me with Q 12, 18 16 & 42, I don't understand the question, I have no idea basically. Please help me with any of the questions.

To Kaiser: No, I don't think so. Only things allowed are pens and pencils.

12 is C because in mRNA Adenine always bonds with Uracil, instead of Thymine. However if there was a Thymine in the DNA nucleotide then it will still bond with Adenine, Cytosine and Guanine are self explanitory.

16: is B If the father has blood group A and if there is a child with Group AB blood then the only possibility is the mother has group B blood, O blood can be transferred by Grandparents, but not AB. Its the same as donimant and recessive genes.

18 is A, but I'm sorry I can't explain it properly.

I have no idea on 42 I'm afraid.

42 is C. Single base changes are less likely to affect an organism than base deletions due to the redundancy of the genetic code, as some codons (triplets of bases) code for the same amino acid in a polypeptide, whereas base deletions will cause a change in every codon after that base. [btw, im pretty sure this is year 12 stuff, so dont worry if you dont get it]

If the single base change was in the initiation codon it would be bad, as the ribosomes in the cell would not know where to start polypeptide synthesis so A is wrong. Out of B and C, it is C, as polypeptide synthesis starts at the 5' end and goes tp the 3' end, and it is less likely to affect an organism if it is at the end, rather than the begining.

No, I won't. I just tend to perform well in multiple choice questions. Apart from that, I am just a fish out of water.

In saying that, you probably have a higher chance of excelling in this than I do.

I am hoping for 60% overall though.

It does not mean you were academically lower than the ones who got in, so that's something to cheer about. I had few friends who got in but on the other hand, I had few who didn't. People who didn't were quite smart but they didn't get in and I was quite surprised by that.

But if your friend got in to that first selection process, that's awesome.

uh are we talkin about nysf or bio olympiad?

for nysf yeah they are interested in your extra-curricula merits as well as your dedication and performance academically. i had 2 interviews - one with local rsl and regional. the regional one there was a group activity and a private interview. and then you had to prepare a speech or something (the one i tried winging = =) so yeah they took it quite srsly
