The real reason they wouldn't have a McDonalds' on campus is it's the symbol of globalisation/big corporations... it'd piss the left off too much.
Exactly right. It would be a constant site of protests by left-wing groups. The Union probably couldn't guarantee security for Maccas, so it's too much trouble...

Well we can tell them to shut the fuck up and bugger off. If not everyone will finally get sick of their antics and rush them.

Which is why the university needs to adopt a policy whereby anyone arrested for violent acts during a protest more than two or three times is automatically booted out of uni.

Good point. Protesting/'taking a stand' shouldn't equal violence. Anyway, anyone who'd bother to protest having a McDonalds on campus is out of touch with the vast majority.
That applies for the vast majority of student politicians anyway doesn't it? "Out of touch with the majority..."

boost juice was initially refused because another student organisation (non-USYD) wanted to be the franchises' owner. now we're looking at getting another owner

Where's the big issue? Are other universities' organisations really that evil?

but it's politics. just like the liberal club wouldn't get catering from a Greens organisation.

YL's have quite often held our events at places run by lefties. I don't see the relevance of who's providing the catering, so long as it's of good quality...

Agreed, the important issue is not whether Those Evil Capitalists are profiteering, but whether students are being offered the best possible service. I do not see how anybody can argue that providing a variety of services such as Boost Juice in addition to Union services could be anything but beneficial to students. For the Union, they might lose their valuable profits from overpriced "discount" food - but the benefits for the average student would be significant. This won't happen anytime soon, as the income from the Union's catering monopoly is too lucrative - and this is most definitely to the detriment of students. The fact is that if the Union offered REAL discounts on food, prices would be significantly lower, as demonstrated by the fact that at both CSG outlets (at Cumberland) and SASCA outlets (at the SCA), non-member prices for food are lower than member prices at main campus and USYD Union-affiliated campuses.
