Just curious to find out what's the average political view that BoS users have.
Since most BoS users are of above average intelligence, I thought it might be interesting to see how that affects the poll.

Feel free to vote in the poll if you want.

i'm generally ignorant towards politics as it seems like more of a nationwide drama fest than actual like shit being done but i have a few thoughts:
1. radicals on both sides are bad. from what i know, radical political beliefs are completely intolerant of any other beliefs and often propose really really dumb changes
2. the people at usyd/unsw preaching socialism are the people that benefit the most from capitalism n are privileged asf & are just posers 🙄🙄
3. most people are probably not fully to one side or the other unlike the us, where politics is part of your identity — similar to how gender is a spectrum
4. continuing pt 1 & linking to pt 3, i think this is obvious, but social media has served to further normalise radical beliefs and has caused little bubbles of beliefs to pop up
5. there is a decent lack of critical thinking done during politics; most people adopt political beliefs from people they've known growing up
6. oftentimes politics leads to short term positives but long time detriments (due to nature of voting and contemporary issues etc.)
anyways this might/could be a misinformed rant as i'm acutely aware that i have ditched the angry sad politics for #sillyness so gn

point number 2 goes hard. I'm so sick of socialists on campus they're too passionate for a movement that's firstly never gonna dominate in the west and secondly isn't a better alternative for capitalism. just let ppl walk to class in peace gosh

Imo labels like this are useless like they remove any sort of critical/logical thought about individual policies and just sort of boil things down to either “left wing always = good” or “right wing always = good” and nobody has a consistent definition for what those terms mean anyway

ngl equating one's stance on a country's economic structure to e.g. their stance on abortion sounds very dangerous, but its good everyone on this thread seems to see thru this farce

Yes, economic left/right and social left/right are regularly poorly correlated

Imo even something like economic left/right is overly simplistic, policies should be evaluated on their individual merit rather than left/right groupings

I am politically inclined to a red rooster being choked on by the foot of an indian elephant under the influence of cocaine and meth 😊.

I agree, but there are surprisingly strong commonalities in views that don't really withstand rational analysis. For example (in social policy), there are plenty of Americans who strongly oppose access to abortion on sanctity of life grounds but also endorse capital punishment - two positions that don't really seem to fit with each other. There are also strongly held views / positions that are ideological and resistant to any evidence that demonstrates their ineffectiveness. Left/right groups (separately) on economic and social policies does provide a useful starting point despite its problematic simplicity.

whos far left lol
The poll started more right but it’s slowing moving to the left which is characteristic of both young people and academics.

I think the difference between social and economic issue conversation is an important one and shouldn’t necessarily be linked into one grouping, however there is a noticeable trend between views in both categories, and while left vs right is an oversimplification, it definitely holds some merit.

Regarding the poll, it’s hard to get an accurate reading with the small sample size. We also have to consider if people even know exactly where they stand, and what their chosen grouping actually stands for. It’s interesting however that the poll is almsot symmetrical at the moment despite the BoS demographic.
