i suppose when you talk about pay you have doctors (specialists more so?), dentists, optometrists maybe? there's not a whole lot of money in the health sector. like for example nurses and all that aren't in it for the money.
yes, sorry. I meant doctors.

I think another appeal of going into medicine is that there's plenty of work in it. There's also high geographical mobility, unlike something like law where it differs in different states/countries. It pays well, and ofcourse there's the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you're helping people etc.
If you're good at sciencey stuff, medicine's probably you're best option.

Not that I want to do medicine. I think I'd rather be more of a research scientist or something

Yeah, well maybe there are elements of pretigeous associated with doing Medicine. I don't rule that out.

I don't wanna do Medicine, But with regards to S1MO's statement of majority people are doing Medicine only for the money might be slightly wrong, well at least in my opinion it is. I reckon studying/setting your career path on something you have absolutely no interest in for the rest of the life would be rather painful, and that the individual will eventually drop out/give up on it. Let's take for example of 1U SOR, you say you lack interest in the subject, and wished it wasn't compulsory. Fair enough. Surely, you won't be as motivated as something like Physics, Maths compared to SOR? Yeah? Now let's relate this back with the people who study Medicine. How would they feel if they have to study something they are not interested in for 6, 7 Years JUST for the moeny? I am pretty sure the experience would be painful... What I am saying is that people must find a interest in a particular course to go well/be successful in it. Majority of doctors aren't motivated by the dollar sign though I admit some are...

I am sure most of us would like to have a high stable income, but there are lots of brilliant kids who score insanely high Medicine-like UAIs, yet they still elect to do something different.

Anyway, this is a rather interesting topic to debate. Feel free to criticize me if you want. I would like to hear LottoX's opinion on this :)

I very much disagree with the idea that most people go into medicine for the big bucks.

The truth is, to study medicine and to be a doctor able to practise independently, you will need to have had at least, at least 11-15 years study from what I have read. And not to mention how much uni debt you need to pay off using the (low) income most fresh doctors have. The big bucks only really come when you're older.

That said, yes, some people do enter the medical profession for the money. But can't the same be said for other careers, such as law, banking, business etc? It's just something we always see. Humans are, quintessentially, just innately selfish.

Yeah, LottoX can brief us on med :D

So what do these med students do for part time jobs within those 7 years?
When you think about it, maybe they are not overpaid after coz they're facing the risk of failure to complete their degree, potentially being poor in most of their 20s, and like one of the guys said, most of they only get into the big bucks after 10+ years.

Good post, and yeah, what you said in the above quote is very true. Its just what i've seen with people at my school, people want to do business, medicene or law specifically want to do those degrees solely for the money. One idiot believes that he will get $300,000/yr if he does medical science, and the others are simply morons who are in it for the money.

That being said, there are other (normal) people that i know outside of school who want to do medicene for the benefit of helping others. So yeah, you're most certainly right in that regard.

'Year 11 people' is exactly the impression I've gotten regarding the members of the BoS community who generally exhibit a lot of the paranoia over the extreme 'no-grey-area' perceptions of academia affecting the rest of their very long lives.

Actually, 'a lot of money' (or at the very least clearly above the national average) income is practically guaranteed in medicine because of shortage and demand. In law it is not guaranteed because of the sheer number of law students vs the number of positions available in law, particularly in major law firms where there is the potential for big bucks.

Now that is comedy, from a very politically incorrect standpoint. I want to agree with it, but it won't be fair to the caucasian poncy faggot medical student demographic.

well i dont know what year you are in, but i know i am hijacking the year 11 thread .

and sorry i was referring more to jobs in the business field and lawyers, not medicine. my bad. much more potential in those jobs (as opposed to medicine) but definitely not guaranteed.

Year 11s- What's your desired uni course?

Hi. I am just wondering what you'd all like to be studying and where at in 2009.

Not really sure... Possibly commerce or a variant at UNSW.

It's good to see people knowing what to aim for! That's your target!
