ok women in sparta had minimal land ownership right in the beginning of the classical period, they could inherit land/estates from their family but did not own it and had to pass it down to offspring, whereas near the end of the classical period they got more land ownership rights and could manage their own estates and dowries while their husbands were doing service for Sparta. then aristotle got pressed bc women owned 2/5 of sparta's land and was like noooo this will lead to women government nooo
Yes, and the reason that they gained extra rights was because of one particular battle where a lot of men died. Although they didn't have any formal political powers or agency, this gave them direct influence over a very significant aspect of the Spartan way of life—the syssitia. According to Aristotle, at one point, women owned 40% of the kleroi. This, he asserted, was a significant problem because it inhibited men from providing to the syssitia, thereby creating an imbalance, and therefore, the fall of the Spartan empire at the battle of Leucra. Aristotle asserts the provision of additional rights to Spartan woman contributed to their downfall.

is the stress getting to u promise its not that deep im pretty sure dumb cunt that SPARTA IS APART OF GREECE
SPARTA is a culturally DISPARATE city compared to the rest of GREECE because of its unique LIFESTYLE and its abandonment of SIGNIFICANT culutural practices including POETRY and ART and THEATRE. many ATHENIAN historians don't LIKE sparta.

she thinks because shes doing sparta all we should talk abt is sparta anyway forget abt doin git on the thread guys what are the battles abt for greek world idk who lead them all
HAHAHA ok idrk about marathon but
- thermopylae: the greeks were betrayed by a traitor who showed persians a secret mountain pass which allowed persians to attacks greeks and spartans from the rear and killed a lot of them, so the greeks like dipped and left the 300 spartans led by king leonidas alone and they fought to the death which delayed persians from reaching mainland greece and allowed athens to evacuate in time
- artemisium was fought with the persian fleet contingent that was supposed to go to thermopylae, the persian ships kept getting obliterated in coastal storms whereas the greeks were local to the weather conditions and knew how to ride them out, but then news of greek defeat in thermopylae reached them and the greeks retreated

battle of salamis: naval battle led by eurybiades and themistocles' plan to lead persian fleet into narrower straits since it favoured the greek/corinthian fleet as they were significantly outnumbered. they then utilised some kind of ram-and-manouvre tactic which sunk the persian ships and caused like a chain reaction of these ships sinking other ships, destroyed them.

battle of plataea and mycale idrk i gotta revise that rn
