ok, ill tell you what i can from my understanding but i cant guarantee its correct, its just from nesa vids on moderation and what my teachers have said but basically
the mark u get in ur hsc gets moderated to your internal ranking, but what it does is get the top mark, the average, and the lowest mark,

every other mark inbetween gets averaged out,
so in a cohort of like 100 eng adv kids, say you were 25th,then you get the average between the mark of the 1st mark and the average mark

what this lowk means is that ur internal mark doesnt even get taken into consideration, which makes sense because its hard to verify the difficulty at what different schools give their internal assessments, and hsc is the only exam that every single student sits

but again if im wrong then please lmk anyone
oh noo im like bottom at my school, my school is highly competitve academics wise too

explain pls am confused, r rankings really that important?
from my understanding, this is how it works:
1. You get your internal ranks
2. Say the highest internal mark was 60 and the lowest was 20, and the highest in the HSC was 80 and the lowest was 60 - the highest rank internal will get 80 as their internal mark, and the lowest rank internal will get 60 as their internal mark (externals are not affected)
3. If you're in between, then you get moved accordingly! So if you say ranked 2nd with a 54 internally, that would probably get changed to approximately 77. Note that though your actual internal mark doesn't do anything, it still determines how well you moderate, so it's not purely rank that matters.
4. Then they average this score and your external mark!

I'm not sure at what point the alignment process occurs though, sorry

yea dont worry abt it too much if thats the case then, cuz like if the lowest mark in the hsc was a 70 and top was 100 then the average is still good! thats why ppl say a good cohort will pull your marks up, and vice versa, so if everyone does well then its a win win situation
