to all the ext 1 mathers out there for binomial distribution questions where they ask us to do normal approximation, am i supposed to use continuity correction or nah

my teacher said it was out of syllabus so like its useful for understanding but not necessary if ykwim. ngl that was like the last thing i learnt so lowkey breezed out of my head lol

sweet of you to defend them but it is quite bad in those countries, yes there are a lot of misconceptions but at least in China, factory schools are a real issue (academics have been a part of the culture for a while tbh, since even before the revolution) and the suicide rates are ridiculously high
a simple example would be the prevalence of high schools that completely structure their students’ days down to the minute, forcing them to have 5 hours of sleep a night and the rest of their days all spent studying
SK I agree might not be as bad but I'm 75% sure there's a decently cruel tutoring culture over there

Just adding on some stats on your reply (I totally agree by the way) South Korean education culture is actually just as horrific as china’s, however the equivalent of factory schools in SKorea would be the extracurricular and out of school tutoring (more tutoring tho). China doesn’t have out of school tutoring (at least legally now) so all the stress would come schools within and self-studying. Both would have societal expectations.
However, stats do allow us to see the high suicide rate in South Korea which is quite high and studies have shown the correlation between academics and mental health. It would be difficult to find the same statistics for china due to the lack of nationwide surveys and even if the results exist, I’m not a xinhua journalist so normal people can’t access it either way.

how do u guys like some of my pip ideas so far;

I think I have 2 ideas I'm leaning into for my pip. But I'm still gonna brainstorm more and add to these ideas

My first one is the Gen Alpha generation and how social media, etc affects their development--> like how they're growing up so much faster compared to other generations. And maybe I can dive into Sephora kids and all that stuff

The second one is Tiger parenting and stuff about tutoring centres, academic pressures and the effect it has on their identity, mental health, etc. Maybe I can compare it to parents of different ethnicities or from different areas cause some are more chill than others

yeah but theres always gonna be like the freaks in top selective schools that somehow get full marks. i saw an article yesterday from smh i think and there were cherrybrook high kids saying that the adv math paper was hard but they were "always happy to take on the challenge" and it wasn't too hard bc they did so many past papers
LIKE BRO GET OUT I DID ALL THE PAST PAPERS FROM OUR SYLLABUS AND MY SUCCESS ONE BOOK SO BASICALLY EVERYTHING SINCE LIKE 1995 I THINK AND I GOT LIKE 74 RAW MARKS (Based on that guy's answers) AINT NO WAY YOU WERE HAPPY TO DO THAT PAPER LITERALLY PISS OFF

I mean I know quite a few year 7s and 9s and so hopefully it won't be too awkward. But tbh my school doesn't have too many tiger parents cause I don't go to a selective school so idk how I"m gonna get people. Unless I rock up to a random tutoring centre and do iti there idk

if ur school is selective then defo they have tiger parent victims i think but whatever is feasible for u

ahahaha probably for the best that you didn't. they probably would've said it was 'the easiest thing ever'
like math was my 'fun and easy' subject but yesterday proved that it clearly wasnt

ext 1 ppl do u reckon they can mark us down for minor differences in z scores? like i marked myself down for one of the questions from smarter maths cuz i got a z score of 1.6 whereas the answer got a z score of 1.58

my immediate reaction was surely not right? they wont be that petty. but also if u round too early, isnt that also a problem? anywyas i think its a good idea to be strict when ur marking urself just in case bc its better than getting it wrong in the exam

nah they wouldnt mark down for this since 1.58 rounds up to 1.60 you are in an acceptable range of error

yea plus they used like a different formula to mine, though they should give you the same z score in the end. i used the sigma = sqrt(np(1-p)) and E(X) = np one, whereas they used the sample proportion thing
