Does anyone have any idea what this question is asking me to do. Im just a bit stuck.

Conflicting perspectives exist within texts and their representation is affected by the context of the composer.

Using your prescribed text and a related text of your own choosing, assess the impact of this statement on a contemporary audience.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

It would be much easier to offer more specific advice if you would tell us what your prescribed and related text is.

first of all, don't be alarmed by the term 'contemporary audience'-essentially it just means audience-treat it like a normal question, basically 'assess the impact of this statement'.

1)From my understanding, when the question asks you to assess the impact, it is essentially to assess the extent to which this statement is true and use detailed evidence from your prescribed and related to support your assessment(through the presentation of personality/events/situation)

2)At the heart of conflicting perspectives is to focus on the representation process-which is between the author and the audience, with the text as a vehicle for conveying these conflicting perspectives within the text as well as invoking conflicting perspectives within the responder. basically, the question is asking you

How does the world/society the composer lives in affects their dualistic/conflicting representations of personality/event/character, for example, within Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, it was composed at a time where Elizabethans were worried that monarchism would possibly an unviable form of government with Queen Elizabeth nor married, near dying and haven't named an heir to succeed her in the throne, and through conflicting perspectives on Julius Caesar's assassination, coupled with the assassin's death-obviously the agenda behind the presentation of this conflicting perspectives within the text is to promote imperialism over republicanism, and hints Shakespeare's personal bias in supporting monarchism- so essentially:

the context the composer lives in as well as the personal context of the composer(his/her life) influences the biases they integrate within their representations of conflicting perspectives within their text on personalities/situations/events, which positions the audience to privilege a particular view, and often through this positioning-or through the process of promoting audience to come up with an independent, personal judgment, we realise the usefulness of conflicting perspectives: i.e. revealing inherent bias of composer, or the fact that objective truth can only be accumulated through consideration of conflicting viewpoints etc...

remember to structure your paragraphs on conflicting presentation of personality/event/situation-follow the syllabus and you can never go wrong. And of course, remember to assess the impact on contemporary audience-which essentially just means you-(in other essay questions-you are actually already assessing the impact on a contemporary audience, so don't need to particularly mention anything happening in the current context)-just focus on the representation process and you will be fine:)
