I think I am interpreting something wrong but I am going to studying a B.COM majoring in Finance this year part time and it says you need a minimum of 68 credit points to be awarded the degree but I can only see a minimum of 16 subjects that are listed for the whole degree and major including the people and planet subjects. At 3cp a subject, this only equals 48 points.

I have also only counted one subject from the list of subjects that tell you to choose one of (eg. accounting 1a or accounting information for decision making)

What am i missing here?

Space for electives.

Most degrees leave room for you do extra units. Most perhaps do another major (if there is enough CP left to fit it in) or just take random units that interest them.

Do i have to do any electives or can I finish the degree as quick as I can?

I don't want to spend 5-6 years doing the degree considering I already have a full time career.

Yes, you do have to complete electives if they are a requirement of your degree. However the handbook page for the B. Comm. is very strange... obviously something must be making up extra credit points to make 68, however usually it will specify 'balance of electives required ...cp'. It's odd that this hasn't been put in, but i would assume the extra credit points would indicate electives. I would call the uni to clarify.

I am going to call them tomorrow. I have been sitting here for a couple of hours racking my brain thinking there has to be more to it. I don't mind doing extra subjects if I can pick up a second commerce major but I hope I am not forced to do more than the required 2 people and planet subjects, which I think is silly as I don't have any interest whatsoever in anything outside the faculty I am studying under. And they force you to choose outside your faculty.

On that note, do the people and planet subjects count towards your GPA?

All units taken for credit count towards your GPA. If they ARE electives, you can use them on whatever you want. There won't be enough of them to take up another major/minor, but you can use them on extra commerce units to deepen your understanding of a particular topic.
