Not having even started yet I obviously don't know which specialisation I want to take (first?) however I do know which ones I have so far decided I do NOT want to take, and OBGY is right up there.

So is crazy-surgery.

i heard perth is becoming a ghost town in a few years/decades?

(from a very unreliable source)

*runs and hides, grabs AK47 for protection from those crazy westies^)*

^not sydney westies :D

but yeh, with rural you're looked after really well anyway. The main fear is that you'll be so far away from family and friends. Which doesn't seem to matter considering most of you guys are travelling interstate to do med anyway

Haha yeah I am pretty west now eh...damn WA, everything here incorporates the word "West" or some other element in a ploy to manipulate the locals' dodgy non-Eastern-states pride.

Seriously, for EVERYONE here there's "the Eastern states" and there's WA. Even MILK is sold on the "buy local" ploy (as opposed to in NSW, where it's sold on the "milk" ploy).

Still, Wilson's right about Perth. Despite being a quaint little town, it's pretty sweet. Great place to raise a family, and nice river. Too bad about the annual algae blooms (and all the FRIGGIN' DUST EVERYWHERE).

Sif get sued, I'm gonna be a GOOD doctor. :p

At the moment I'm not thinking much about MBBS/BA or MBBS/PhD because I want to see how well I do in just the MBBS program. It's a very different method of learning to what I did in straight science last year, and as I go on there will be even more deviation in the mode of instruction, as well as the mode of learning (clinical rotations as opposed to tutorials etc).

Sigh.

I am at a stage where I don't actually know anything about medicine, let alone what I actually like about medicine...so I can't really answer that. I really know more about what I DON'T want to do.

These are: Obstetrics/Gynaecology (too many crazy women, both patients and peers), General Surgery (I like sleeping and seeing my friends while still alive), Paediatrics (kids don't know when to stop - and they're downright disgusting), Pathology (get me away from that nasty histology). Maybe Anaesthesia or Ophthalmology (if I can manage to get in - extremely competitive) or God forbid, General Practice (something I thought I'd never be into). The other fields haven't been considered properly yet though, since I haven't had any experience with them.
