Connecting Cable modem via Usb (2 Viewers)

Then I assume Local Area Connection 3 is the one you've applied the settings to...

Is this happening on both computers when they are both turned on and connected? Was the crossover cable homemade or purchased? (just considering the possibility the crossover might be broken)

Yep both computers are on and connected. The crossover was purchased from a shop, and i've only used it twice in which case it worked fine both times.

If you look at the network card itself, there should be LED indicators, usually "Connected" or "Link", "100" (mbps) and "Act"tivity.

Do the NIC LEDs indicate that a network cable is plugged in?

None of them flash when i plug the cable in, on both computers. So maybe the cable is damaged?

One network card only has one led, the other one has 3 leds, one for "10", another for "100" and the last one for activity. So im not sure if they are supposed to flash..

If both computers are on, and you've tried it on the NICs you have and none of the NICs indicate a cable is connected when you plug it in, then I think its a very good possibility the cross over cable has a problem. If you have a multimeter try and check each wire in the cable for breaks.

edit: for your 10,100,act NIC, I assume your crossover cable is a CAT5 cable so it should be for 100 - if the 100 lights up, this is the equivalent of "Connected" (at 100mbps)

What ill do, ill switch the cable modem and cross over cable (i.e. put them in diff network cards) and i'll see if any lights come on/

hmmm, the modem didnt work on the other nic. Maybe the nic is the problem aswell? It detected fine in windows (its a realtek chipset)

oh no i didnt. Ill try again. I can leave the other computers settings alone?

Ok i did that, and i got the activity light to work on the computer with one nic, so the cable is good. But the led on the other nic on the other computer, didnt light up. So i think that NIC is stuffed.

I cant see both computers when i go to the my network places window. I can only see my own.

You are getting me extremely confused with what you have tested and how your network is set up.

Does the NIC on the "other" computer have a "Connected" indicator at all? Can each computer ping itself and the other computer?

ok sorry Ive attached a dodgy paint drawing of what i looks like. Yes the other computer has a connected indicator, and it was lighting up. I dont know how to ping a comp....

Start -> Run, type "cmd", hit enter

A command prompt opens up. On computer 1 (assuming you have the second NIC's IP set to 192.168.0.1), type "ping 192.168.0.1" and hit enter. The computer should then try and ping itself....you should get 4 messages that say "Reply from ....". If that worked, it means you've configured the settings for the NIC in computer 1 correctly

Now try "ping 192.168.0.2". Computer 1 will then try and communicate with Computer 2, requesting Computer 2 reply to Computer 1's ping messages. If Computer 1 can successfully connect to Computer 2, you will see similar "Reply from" messages...

Repeat on Computer 2.

You can do the ping'ing while connected to the net.

YAY! the ping worked. No packet loss. And times <1ms. But that only works with the NIC i usually use for the cable internet. Otherwise it wont work

Yeh but that way i have to keep changing the modem to a different nic, cos it wont work with one of them.

Does the second NIC in Computer 1 work with the cable modem? If it does, then that would suggest a software configuration problem of the second NIC in Computer 1 (remember to undo the changes when testing the cable modem). If it doesn't, then it hasn't worked for both the cable modem and the CAT5, and that suggests either an installation problem or a hardware problem.

It only has one LED, and it has never lit up. No indication at all. The NIC appears to be working in Device Manager.

The 2nd NIC doesnt work for anything Eventhough Device Manager says its working.
