Is there any indication in the manual what the single LED is for?
If you are up for it, replace the NIC in Computer 2 with this suspect NIC in Computer 1, making sure you configure it just as the previous NIC was configured. And use the cable modem NIC in Computer 1 with the network cable.
Then try the pinging again. If the pinging fails, then it can be safe to say that this NIC is causing the trouble.
If not, give this suspect NIC to a friend who would be able to test it for you.
I've bought a fair few NICs before....and I've never come across a lemon straight out of the box, even very cheap ones.
