hey guys,
just revising space and I still don't get how to derive length contraction and mass dilation , i'm however totally fine with simultaneity and time dilation.

So how deep should our knowledge be? do we really need to know how to derive all the equations from Einstein's thought experiments? or do we just need to know that time increase's , length contracts etc.. ?

no deriving necessary.

just state the formulas and use them. don't even need to memorise them, they are given to you in the data sheet

Length contraction is a direct consequence of time dilation:

Some dude on a platform measures the length of it, l0, then he measures how long it took for some other dude on some fast ass train to cover the length of the platform, the time he measures is not the proper time. Thus, v= l0/tv

The dude on the train has the proper time, t0. However, his measured length of the platform is not proper, lv. therefore, V = lv/t0

Equating the two velocities:

lv/t0=l0/tv

sub in tv from the time dilation equation,
you'll get

lv = l0(lorentz factor)

i highly doubt you'll need it, nonetheless, you asked for it ;)
