So I'm going to be moving out at the end of the HSC.

I've been working on a table of costs and income and such, but the numbers I've gotten for electricity and water, I'm not sure how accurate they are.

Can anyone tell me how much they're likely to cost?
Thanks :)

Also, is there anything I probably haven't thought of? I've got food, transport, phone/internet/rent and such, as well as immediate costs...

People in the house:
Two females, in Queanbeyan. Boyfriends will visit, but counteracted by visiting boyfriends.

Bond.

2 weeks rent in advance.

Cutlery, toiletries etc.

As for bills, a good way to go is have everyone put $10 a week into a jar. You should be right when the bills come that way.

Have $500 each for emergencies because you never know what could happen.

My parents are paying the bond - until I get my Centrelink payment lump sums, at which point they're getting payed back. Estimating that - including water and electricity bond - to come out at at least $1000?
I've put that on my "immediate spending" list -.-

Toiletries, I hadn't though of properly >.<
Cutlery, my friend's getting her hands on some. Crockery, though.

$10 a week for bills? Just overall?

Thanks :]

Depends on the place.

Generally bond = 4 week's rent. Add the 2 weeks rent in advance.

So your rent x 6, you need.

Toiletries can be expensive as hell. Even supermarket shampoo costs like 8 dollars a bottle. Soap, face wash, conditioner, razors, windex, toilet paper, bleach...

Water & electricity are paid quarterly. They're not that expensive, but do try and be wise with consumption (turn off the light if the TV is on, time your showers etc). $10 each a week, would be a total of $240 once bills come. That should be plenty unless you're being really wasteful.

Cutley, crockery, pots, pans etc. You need to think about those.

Sheets/blankets/pillowcases.

I'm actually not going to have a bed for a few weeks xD. 'Til I get my lump sums from Centrelink. I'm relying on those far too much >.<
But that means I can probs get an airbed fairly cheaply and borrow a sleeping bag from home for a few weeks, saving some money as I work out exact details of week-to-week costs.

Hmm so yeah, roughtly $750 for my part of the bond for rent. Again, I don't know what the electricity/water bond'll be, though.

Urgh. You're right. That first shopping list might come out at $300 or $400 between two of us >.<
I don't know, actually.
I also have no idea how much a relatively basic set of weekly [ish] groceries'll cost for two people...

I also won't have a car, let alone my Ps, for maybe a week or so. That'll save me some, but I'll have to give petrol money to people who keep on giving me lifts D:
Though that probably won't be terribly much.

public transport?

grocery bills for two people can be anywhere from 60-150 a week. Depends on how much you eat where you shop what you eat etc. Generally, shop at the markets, don't buy too much meat, buy frozen veggies etc.

stuff the airbed to be honest.. just take your matress from home? it'll be a waste of money getting it and then not using it once you get a real bed.

I live with my sister and our groceries are ususally between seventy and a hundred a week, and we don't but too cheaply, just sensibly.

Depending on your lifestyle, you may find that you'll spend more on food going out than you will buying groceries. But yeah meat is really exxy don't buy it. And give up smoking if you smoke.

From working at a supermarket these are the two things that I know cripple budgets.

Ahaha no, my mum's not letting me take the mattress or the bed from home xD.
I could always scab the couch - and anyone who sleeps over'll have an airbed to sleep on. [Yeah, friend's probably getting a new couch for Christmas]

Hmm to an extent public transport'll work, something like a $6 trip into Canberra... All depends where I get a job, though. Some hours/locations might be crappy for the buses.

Okay, thanks. A lack of prepared dinners, or part prepared dinners, lots of stew type stuff probably..?
So estimate probably $100 a week, for moderated shopping. As both the boyfriends plan to cook when they're at our place, if they need something we won't use they can buy that themselves xD

Editedit
So not a smoker >.< just yuck.
And I'm glad I don't like much meat :]
Thanks

If I can ask is it really pertinent that you move out so quickly? Because I think you should stay behind until you have a little more $ saved up.

A decent mattress will cost a lot. A shitty one will screw your back up something proper.

For food, buying fresh food is cheaper than buying pre-prepared anything. General rule of thumb [also from working @ a supermarket and doing food tech].. the more processed something is, the more it will cost. Meat, dairy cost a lot. Buy generic brands of bread & toilet paper & such, don't splurge on basics. Don't try to live off noodles though lol

If the boyfriends want to cook tell them to bring food from home. =]

Jesus Sid, I live at home with my folks and I'm sure we don't have 3/4s of that stuff.

Oh my god, thankyou so much Sidicious.
Hadn't even thought of like half of those even on the necessities >.<

As for moving out later - if I move out during January, I'll have a summer job in Goulburn [45 minute drive from my current home, hour drive from Queanbeyan], and it'll be a summer job. I'd be forced to apply for a parttime job with the hordes of people also going to Canberra/Queanbeyan and wanting a parttime job to support their study xD.
Essentially, I'm not fussed on a few weeks of an airbed or something, if it means I'll have a job that I can continue with throughout my study.
Not to mention the hordes of people wanting accommodation. It's kind of first-in-best-dressed, for both job and apartment, so it's more logical [for me, anyway] that if I'll have the capacity to be earning at least what I need to pay bills and rent and groceries, I should move out earlier rather than later.
Oh, and the Queanbeyan rent market is currently cheaper than it's been in a couple of months >.> I have no doubt it'd go back up come January.

So shopping'll be noodles and such, bread, milk, fresh and frozen veges/fruit, soup bases, stock powders and such...
:]

Use a pull out couch.
Use a microwave oven.
Shower every other day.
Share toothbrushes.
Share needles.
Flush when necessary.
Don't flush at all.
Steal drugs from friends.
Sell drugs to friends.
Sleep with landlord.

Hope this helps.

paying fo wireless is essential, and with 3 people living together you better make sure there isn't excessive porno downloading because something like 10gb a month on naked adsl2+ is like 30-40 dollars a month from tpg. Also if you're guranteed to know what circumstances you'll be in the future try to find a place where the lease is a long period contract so that way your rent increases less frequently after you renew your lease because there will always be others out ther who are willing to pay more

My bro has TPG.

He pays $50 a month for 100GB. I hate him. I'm living off 4GB a month on the household PC.

Is it of crazy importance that you move out straight away. I know i was really excited about moving out ASAP after the HSC, but the expenses really do come out of nowhere. I've lived with my boyfriend for the past 15 months and we spend $100-$120 on groceries. We put $20 each a week into an account for bills, there is always a fair bit in there but we are always fully covered for bills etc... We don't pay water at the moment because we're in a villa complex but electricity is approx $50 - $70 a month, less in summer but more in winter when you have a heater and a dryer that have to be used occasionally. The main expense is buying the things you need to set up your home, i did most of this in the HSC year so that it wasn't one huge expense but it probably cost me abou $1000 and that was buying most things second-hand.. it all adds up fast.
We spent about $400 on the first shop as well, just buying necessities.

Good Luck :):)
