has anybody here tried/ know someone who has tried couchsurfing? it sounds like a good idea in theory, eg. cheap travel, getting to know people of the culture etc, but does it work? is it safe?

We picked up a hitch hiker one day who did it. So he was telling me how he's travelled all over just couch surfing around. I'm thinking of offering my place next year, or later this year, when things get settled.

My old room mate took off to Europe last year after offering his couch to people for over a year. Now, they're returning the favour and he's loving it.

Another couchsurfer here. Was fortunate enough to couchsurf a few times aroudn SE Asia. It was a great experience and let me experience the place in ways that most tourists can't.
