Hey guys,

I'm currently doing acct1501, econ1101, fins1612 and mgmt1001 and what I've realised is that I have no idea what courses I can do in Semester 2... I'm aiming at doing an actuarial studies and finance major.

Seems like I can only do fins1613 in semester 2, heeeeeeelp!

Thanks.

you havent done math1151 this semester which you must do in sem 1 if you want to major in actuarial. maybe you have to wait til next year.

and here are the flexible courses. choose four courses from the following list: choose ACTL and FINS since you want to major in those two.
ACCT1511 Accounting & Financial Mgt 1B (6 UOC)
ACTL1001 Actuarial Studies and Commerce (6 UOC)
ECON1102 Macroeconomics 1 (6 UOC)
FINS1613 Business Finance (6 UOC)
INFS1602 Info Systems in Business (6 UOC)
LEGT1710 Business and the Law (6 UOC)
MARK1012 Marketing Fundamentals (6 UOC)

If you wanted to Actuarial you should've been doing 1151 now so you can do 1251 next sem. I'm not sure they offer 1251 in Summer so... I think you kinda stuffed up your degree a bit, maybe.

It says MATH1151 is a prerequisite for ACTL1001... Doesn't that mean I have to do math1151 first to be able to begin actl1001?

Would it be advised that I swap FINS1612 for MATH1151 right now? I know this will mean missing this week's lectures but now is better than never...

Do you know if they've done a lot of work yet? Missing the 4hrs of lectures worries me...

You should really go and talk to the first year advisor or "Contact" or something. Better still, sit down and read your handbook...

you missed a few new concepts but having the lecture notes will help you heaps. and you can ask for help in the tutorials.

Well I swapped fins1612 to fins1613 yesterday and am wondering when my blackboard will change accordingly... Does it change automatically or will I have to do something extra for it to do so?

It takes 4 hours for blackboard to update with your myunsw timetable. For an Actuarial Major, you should be doing:

Year 1 Sem 1: MATH1151
Year 1 Sem 2: MATH1251, ACTL1001

Year 2 Sem 1: ACTL2001, ACTL2002 (ACTL2001 is also available in summer school if I recall)
Year 2 Sem 2: ACTL2003

Year 3 Sem 1: ACTL3001, ACTL3002
Year 3 Sem 2: ACTL3003, ACTL3004

There's also ACTL3005 but that's not needed for Exemption I.

For a finance double major, the cores are FINS1612, FINS1613, FINS2624 and FINS3616 and then you can choose 3 FINS courses out of the list they give you.

My blackboard has still not updated yet... Maybe they don't work on weekends...

Anyhow, do you know an alternative route to an actuarial studies and finance major with my current courses: ACCT1501, ECON1101, FINS1613, MGMT1001?

If you don't do MATH1151 now then you have to do it in year 2 sem 1 because MATH1151 is only offered in semester 1. This sets you back 1 year :S. As for finance, I think all finance courses are offered both semesters so you can still get a finance major in 3 years doing the first year courses you have now.

So the plan is to swap FINS1613 to MATH1511 in order to complete the actuarial studies major in 3 years?

or you can do your flexible core/finance subjects this year first, then start MATH1151, MATH1251 + the actuarial subjects next year. you will still complete your degree on time.
