one of our assignments for PoMo is to do a creative task based on the 2004 HSC question:

"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect"-- Mark Twain

i have absolutely nooo idea what to write... obviously we have to employ all the basic techniques of postmodernism (metafiction, intertexuality, pastiche etc.) but in terms of a story line i am at a total loss...

does anybody have any ideas they would like to contribute?

Maybe try to be a little more specfic about what sort creative task. But I'll help you because I like Twain. But I am slightly offended that he is being used in HSC english.

What he is true. Through life a smart person will always reflect upon his choices and how he thinks. This is how you grow, by having what you thinking questioned. Regardless of whether you have a person do it (thought this is easier as they can clarify points) or through books.

Now like Mark Twain I also know that people are natrually corrupt and stupid. If you find more quotes by him this becomes obvious. I think this stems from him being in the media and as such being witness to politics and it's under-belly.

Now, if all people are stupid. And your thinking is in phase with how the majority see things, knowing as we know they are stupid. We can by a process of deduction assume that your thinking pattern is also stupid. Realizing that, you can pause and reflect.

That is the most obvious answer but I know how HSC loves "layers of meaning" So you could also argue that it appiles to people's love of novelty and as such there are always people who want to break away and do something different.
Then you could argue that today's media and it's global village mean that people are no longer making choices as the media shape everything.

Then you could also argue that people never really had choice due either biological and/or cultural influences from way back.

Then tie it back into the concept of freedom of thought and argue that there is no such thing. Or that due to outside factor you thought process is not wrong mearly different no matter how stupid or bizaar it may seem.

But this in it self has problems due to the uneven playing field that people come from (ability to process information) and as such will some pick up a 100% of what is being said other will only understand say 66% and draw their conclusions based upon this information.

There. I though of all of that as I went. This isn't really that hard.

Edit: I actually read the question again and realized that I didn't really answer the creative part.

Just do a narrative piece that folows one persons awaking of said quote. Structure it like internal logic. And have them pieceing it back into the thought process of the majority. Perhaps realising that some beliefs are nescessary or inevetible because they system of a whole will never change. Failing that, explore the way in which a person will not compromise his own belief system for the sake of society and as such have them journey to the ends of human experience in a quest for something more.

My god, I'm a genius.

Sort of. I didn't do Extenstion due the fact I'm lazy, instead focusing my skill doing something productive. I lifted weights.

But I am highly interested in society, people, history, culture, art and learning in general. I have a desire to know who I am, where I belong and why I think as I do. I want to a become a man. Not just alive with a penis.

And as such I have invested alot of time in reading social theory and ideas (this includes some of the first hand cited material about post modernism in the further reading section of your hand-out). So when you ask "have I done it" yes, but on my own terms. I find massive holes in it as whole. For me it seems like a cop out. But hey, that's just me. I could be wrong.

What about you?

I disagree, they are perfectly valid example of post modernism. But it's a moot point because noone can actually agree what Post Modernism is.

I'm more interested in the degree your studing. Sounds classy.

whilst what you posted does explore pomo, you talk about it in a very roundabout way.
basically, the quote refers to pomo's resistance to the mainstream. when you find yourself on the side of the majority, you arent being postmodern anymore.
a creative response to this question will use pomo techniques to demonstrate an understanding of pomo, therefore rather than an analysis of human thought and independence it has to be something which isnt contrived.

my degree? B Media and Communications / B Arts (eng + politics)
i studied pomo as part of ee1 last yr

Maybe a short story similar in theme to 'Animal Farm'? Or merging it with a modern, behind-the-sterile-fairytale Cinderella could be excellent...

Contrived? that hurts. This isn't something I thought up in ten seconds, this is 5 years worth of self-reflection. There are no books pushing this, not that I've found. This is founded on wanting to find something more only to have it fall away the closer you get.

understanding of pomo-there is no idea on what it is, so what you write is irrealvent as long as you discuss topic that have element of the post modern construct.

I know what the quote said. I don't care. In this day and age it has different connatations. Media and its impact have far more impact then Twain could have guessed. Fuck, he isn't H.G Wells.

I would argue that being as there has being a rise in alt culture and alt cool which began to take hold with the inception of MTV. (Though it has been around sincee the 1950's) Now person resistance to the obvious mainstream (against the grain; post modern) ends up with them just subscribing to a different mainstrem point of view. (subculture) It would be foolish to believe that companies don't have every aspect of what I like to call "triple J" cool covered.(this includes any sub-culture which is large enough that the can sell products to) They know what people want. To fit in, if they don't fit in then they will find an area or subculture that they can.

So no-one is going against the grain (in the terms of pushing boundries). Unless your into stuff that is just way out. Cock and Ball torture, Costies (the only true rebel, noone want to do what he does)

For me there are 4 types of people. One, the mainstream, those who are stupid and don't know they are being played (Treadies or whatever people call them. Damn Sheep) These people are usually of value, Attractive, Good at Sports etc.

Two, Those who see that they are being played, (triple J cool, punks etc) these people are useless in a conventional sense, not funny, generally suck at life. As such they need there own culture not to feel like a loser. Give them something to talk about.

3, these people have seen through this whole thing and the marketing ploys. They end becoming resentful and alienating themselves because they can't compromise there views. This is the true post moderner in the against the grain. They tend to be into unlisterneble music, usually involved in the fetish community. Good people, werid headspace.

4) They know that everyone get played, mainstream and subcultures. They have delt with and moved on (usually with a great deal hardship) They are now free to do anything, they can like anything and are smart enough (or reflective enough) to evaluate what they want and why they want it. Very few people are like this.

Now group 4 is not subscribing to mainstream views. They are doing it on their own terms. Yes, they in the mainstream so to speak. But the differences is that instead of being adrift like group one they can choose to ignore what they want and take when they please. Here you have freedom, there is no grain because you don't need to prove that you are different. You don't care, you know your right.

And for me the grain is following a culture. Doing what you want, thinking how you want, even if it crosses culture is freedom. This freedom is against the grain.
