Well you could learn a couple of quotes. A good one includes... 'A journey is more than just a movement from one place to another, it is about learning and growth'. (Coleridge). From there on you can work your way up by skimming through your stimulus booklet and refering to Shirley Geok Lin Lim's genii loci, where one 'seeks an external geography that will act on your internal psychology' text 7. Use this as your basis in whatever you write about the imaginitive journey, and I guess just adjust your information according to what your given in the creative writing section.

As for questions, the only advice I can give is practice the different methods of writing, for eg, radio script, letter, essay, news report and so on.

just a small tip:
try to write outside fo your own personality - pretend to be someone older or younger, someone for a toltally different context -
experiment with different forms
"use your imagination" hehe

I was told some good advice for writing a creative piece, though it may sound a little weird at first:

1. Put a man up a tree
2. Throw rocks at him
3. Get him down

I guess the main idea that since it's a SHORT story it really needs to be succinct so you focus on on what is the situation being faced by the protagonist (1), what are the main themes/ obstacles in a journey (2) and the resolution(3) - markers enjoy twists at the end of stories - something unexpected but not cliche.

Hope this is of some help!

I totally agree that you shouldn't go the pre-planned answer route, but it's really good to have a few basic plotlines worked out before you get into the exam room. If they fit the question, fantastic, if they don't, at least your mind isn't totally empty. In my opinion, that's the worst part -staring at the blank answer book and thinking, &%$#, my mind's totally blank.

Some other pieces of advice that I found very useful:

1. Never write a fairy tale. You'll never come up with something good enough and original enough to impress the markers.
2. Non-linear plotlines (eg. flashbacks) add interest. Just make sure the storyline can be followed.
3. Avoid cliches -markers just don't like them.
4. If you write an inner monologue, keep the action going. Don't get stuck into lots of expressed feelings (eg. I can't believe he did this. I always thought he'd be around forever. It really brings home to me how fragile life is. I could have imagined us riding off into the sunset etc; etc; (sorry about the terrible example, you get what I mean).)
