like a unit in the HSC, except most subjects are 6 credits, instead of 2 units, and uni requires e.g. 144 credits, instead of 10 units

it will be pretty self explanatory when you get into uni

Yeah, think of credit points as units. In high school, normally 1 subject is worth 2 points. In uni, 1 subject equals 6 points.

You take units (subjects) to earn credit points.
To complete a degree, you must fulfill the credit point requirements for that degree, say 96 overall.
If you take a unit worth 3 credit points and pass that unit, those 3 credit points will contribute towards the 96 you need to earn overall to complete the degree. If you fail, you do not earn the 3 credit points.
Credit point systems differ between universities, at one university a unit may be worth 3 credit points each, at another it may be worth 6.

Depends on uni, different unis use different values (although 6 is a fairly common number) and also different terminology (e.g. at ANU you do a 'course' to earn 6 'units', as opposed to doing a 'unit' to earn 6 'credit points').
