How could you do that in an exam with no calculators! ;)

I wrote 4.3s in the exam, but my way of working it out was:

9600 bits per sec / 8 bits per byte = 1200 kilobytes per sec
1200 / 1024 bytes = 1.171875 kilobytes per sec
4 KB / 1.171875 kilobytes per sec
= 3.4133333333333333333333333333333

that's how i usually work things out, anyway,
for example:
56K = 56,700 bps
56,700 bps / 8 = 7087.5 Kbps
7087.5 Kbps / 1024 = 6.92138671875 KBps (Kbytes)

Theoretical bandwidth for 56K is about 7KB/s.
I should have started off by knowing this, (slipped my mind),
then dividing 56K by 9.6K
(about 6)

Dialup downloads at 7KB/s (tops)
meaning for a 9.6K modem, it'll be about 1/6th of 56K,
7/6 is roughly 1.1KB/s

4KB file, going at a max of 1.1KB/s
4 / 1.1 = ~3.6
Which is close enough to 3.4 secs, moreso than 4.3 seconds :)
(This was one page back) :)

Isn't IPAT another programme, not the HSC course 'IPT'

Unless your school calls it IPaT (inclusion of the Information Processes 'and' Technology)

Oh well, :)

Oh alright, well most people call it IPT,
I'm not used to seeing "IPAT" because I confuse that with the other subject "IPAT" (forget what it stands for).

industrial preparation and training?
or something like that... Year 10s did it

- Read the text
- Know definitions
- Know examples
- Know how to use design tools, (context diagram, data flow diagram, system flow chart, data dictionaries, entity-relationship diagrams (ERDs), schemas, all the rest)

I don't know your weaknesses,
but you should also know how to do calculations, such as video/audio and filesize problems. (Or your basic odd/even parity questions).

I tend to read and revise, (and my revision consists of reading, haha).

It works for me, I don't know about you though, so you'll have to find your own method/style. :)

I cant believe how straight forward the paper was. My IPT teacher almost gave me the paper in class and was just like...memorise all this crap and ull get full marks! (that's how we felt)

Hi skip to my lou,
We only received our question booklets back today, so I've got al lthe questions here with me.

But, the paper itself (CSSA IPT) is being marked as we speak. They will hopefully be given back to us tomorrow, if not on Monday morning (or whenever we have IPT).

I do have good news, however.
Our teacher has marked all of the sections except Q25 and Q27 or something (which are our Options (TPS and Communication Systems), so the Multiple Choice and Short Answer questions have been marked, they haven't been finalised/recorded yet, so we'll know tomorrow).

The only thing I can tell you?
I got 18/20 for the multiple choice section.

What did I get wrong?
* the 4KB image, 9600 bps question. (Even though I knew I got it wrong at the time, I wrote 4.3 seconds, however after the trial I figured it out (see other threads in IPT) and it was 3.41 seconds (or 3 seconds, A).

* the query (speeding fines, red lights).
I chose B, which I believe to be correct, but C is "more correct"
because offence = speeding OR offence = red light
something like that.

It also asked for 21 "and under"
so I deliberately missed "<22" instead, I picked "<=21"

Only two marks, we'll see tomorrow, though, as to the outcome :)

haha i got that one wrong too
i got 18/20 as well for multiple choice...i got the asynchronous question wrong tho
i had no idea
;)

yeah that query question tho...that was heaps ambiguous...

it was weird tho...that 9600BPS question was like a band4/5 question or something (according to CSSA Solutions)

I spent about 30 seconds reading the question, I knew it was going to take a while (without a calculator), so I left it.

With about 3 minutes to go (forfeiting marks in the "storyboard" section of the Communication Systems Option), I decided to go back and fill in something for the 9600 bps question.

I knew it wasn't 0.4
6 seconds seemed too long,
so I was tossing up between 3 seconds and 4.3 seconds.

9600 bps (this is the baud rate, so I am convinced that they should have mentioned the rate of transmission, not the 'line capacity'. ie it does not operate at 9600 bps all the time. Take a look at 56K (or 56,700bps). It will not operate at:

56700 bps
56700 / 8
= 7087.5 Kbps

7087.5 / 1024
= 6.92 KBps

Now, you don't see dialup constantly downloading (or transferring/uploading) at 7KB/s!

That's why I chose 4.3 (D) as a "this looks logical to me" answer, without having to calculate, convert, divide, multiply, etc.

I got the asynchronous transmission.
You had to look at which ones did (or did not) have parity bits.
(Doesn't really matter if it's odd or even).

Then you looked at which ones had start and stop bits.
Some had 1 start bit, 0 stop bit. Others didn't have start bits, while some were talking about 7-bit characters (where asynchronous uses 8-bit (or 1 byte blocks) with start and stop bits (10 bits all up).

gees whiz...I think i get my mark back on wednesday. fortunately i got the 6400 baud rate question right thanks to u huy! and the offence one I put C cos we had this discussion in class and he said Offence=whatever OR Offence-whatever. I had about 30 mins left when i finished. I didnt do TPS or communication systems either. Most of the stuff was like straight out of the syllabus. The storyboard question which layout did u use and what sort of HW devices did u use for Q24?

I'm hoping for full marks for my SFC (it was out of 4 I think).
Because I had everything labelled, correct diagrams, and it was logical (made sense, you could see where data came from, storage devices, paper outputs, online displays, processes, etc).

I did a context diagram for Q21 (you may have read it in another IPT thread). I only realised that I had done it wrong when it became a little too complicated! So I left the diagram and went onto the theory/writing sections.

So I've got marks there for failing to draw what was required (a dataflow diagram).

I'm a little nervous about getting my marks back, because this has been the first IPT exam which I hadn't fully completed (I used up the entire 3 hours without checking any of my work, and I left the back page of Communication Systems because I didn't have enough time. (I write a lot btw to ensure that I can get 3/3, 4/4 or 6/6, etc.)

Hopefully that'll offset any marks that I had lost, by making up for it in getting high marks in other sections, and forfeiting other marks in other areas :)
