A WOMAN is outraged after she was kicked out of the Northern Territory's biggest shopping centre for wearing a bikini top.

Barbara Rilatt and her husband Neil, both 28, were furious to be asked by security if they had a T-shirt to cover up her upper body or to leave Casuarina Square last week.

Centre manager Ben Gill said the incident was a misunderstanding as bikini tops were not banned in Casuarina Square.

Ms Rilatt, a nurse of Lee Point, said the incident was upsetting.

"How could you offend someone by being comfortable?" she said.

"The security guard - a woman - came up and said put on a shirt or leave.

"It is fine to wear your jeans down your crack, but not to wear a bikini top?"

Mr Gill said he understood Ms Rilatt was wearing a bra and not a bikini top.

"If she was wearing a bikini, we have made an error," he said.

"I would suggest it came down to a misunderstanding.

"If someone was wearing underwear, then we would ask them to cover up."

Bikini ban 'over the top', says shopper as she is booted out in mall mixup | National News | News.com.au

Plz someone explain the difference between a bikini top and a bra? Apart from functionality (and even then, they both do the same thing. One is made from spandex, the other from cotton). Why is a bra more offensive than a bikini top?:spzz:

I agree, i dont see the difference. Often bikinis reveal a lot more than underwear, so in that sense they could be considered more offensive.

i can understand why the security guards asked her to leave, because some groups that use the shopping centre (older people, mothers with young children, religious people) may take offense to it. I think they did the right thing considering all circumstances.

Well not really, because the owner himself said that bikini tops are allowed.

Children go to the beach. They see bikinis. Why is it more offensive if it's in a shopping mall?? The nipple is covered ... There are "tops" that show as much flesh as a bikini ...

I
don't
get
it

Are we going backwards as a society.

yeah i suppose
but parents that dont want their kids to see that dont take their children to the beach. they need to go to shopping centres and stuff... but anyway off point

i dont see the difference between wearing underwear and bikinis in public, as in, there is not much difference.

=/ probably a bra doesn't have colourful designs, prints and is not as functional as a bikini top. I mean, you don't see women substituting a bikini top with a bra at the beach.

People might as well say if you walk barefoot in a shopping centre, you may as well get kicked out.

idk maybe because underwear is meant to be worn under clothes but bikinis can stand alone as a garment?

whatever the reason it's weird. both are boob-wear. if you can wear one you should be able to wear the other. what about bikinis that look like bras, you know for people with big boobs they put underwire in and so on

a gun appears similar to the letter L.

The letter L is legal for all to use in any situation in Australia (unless it is in support of terror, in which case sedition laws send u to jail). By your logic, so too should a gun

???

???

but what, you don't use guns and letters for the same purpose

a bra and a bikini do the same thing (hold tits in). it's just generally accepted that you wear them in different situations

but really there is no functional difference between them so why get upset about it?

shopping centres are the domain of old people and crazy mums

offensive is defined as anything they don't like

that's why the magazine racks have black covers in front of Zoo and FHM :D

if it's private property I reckon it should be up to whomever owns it.
