I saw what I thought was a good value notebook on the Dell website, but I'm hesitant about buying something so expensive and whatever online...

I'd just like to know if Dell computers or any good, or are they renowned for being crappy? I need a notebook that isn't anything too flash, but will last me through my Uni degree (or as long as possible).

Thanks in advance.

I've owned Dell laptops and monitors. Never had an issue with any of them. I currently own an Inspiron 6000 bought in February, and it's been fantastic. My next PC-laptop will be a Dell when Intel releases their 4th generation Centrino platform next year. Currently the Inspiron 6000 models offer high features with great value. Google up reviews on Dell's standard 14.1-15.4 inch consumer notebooks and you will find that they are 4-4.5/5 star laptops. Build quality isn't as good as say, Asus or IBM (but their machines are much more expensive for the same hardware features). However Vs. brands like Acer/HP/Toshiba, I would not hesitate for one second to choose Dell. I think their main weak point is customer service.

Misleading propaganda bullshit.

The fault is with Sony batteries, not Dell laptops. I really have no clue why a few people still link the exploding fiasco when people ask about buying Dell laptops. It holds no relevance whatsoever.

Dell are an all round reliable mass producer of computers. Their warranty is sound, and they take considerable care putting together a range of computers that suits everybody.

That said, it is always better to build your own. ALWAYS. If you dont have the know how or cant be bothered or you are after a laptop, Dell is not a bad choice at all.

definitely nay. my friend's Dell laptop just died without reason after just 8 months of use. If you seek value for performance, choose Acer or Asus. they have better support and by far cheaper than Dell.

How are they 'far cheaper'? I'm a big fan of ASUS, but I wouldn't call any of their machines 'cheap', let alone 'far cheaper than Dell'. You can routinely get 15.4 inch 1.8GHz T7200 Meroms/1GB DDR2 notebooks from Dell for around $1,200-$1300. I work in IT sales where I deal with ASUS and Acer models daily and I can tell you now you won't find a laptop from either brand with those specs for those sorts of prices. If you want value for hardware performance, Dell is THE place to buy.

If you seek reliability and build quality, I'd look into IBMs, ASUSes and Fujitsus.

I think you're just upset because he politely pointed out something you read wrong.

Am typing from a Dell laptop that we've had for a number of years now! No problems on it's part.
