Do you think that a second stimulus package is Rudd's answer to recession?

As far as I know, the first one failed. People storing it back in the bank, low lifes spending it on gambling, booze etc. Probably a small percentage actually spent it.

A tax cut would be more appropriate. Or stimulus packages going to the right people (not people on welfare ffs)

Lol because that helped America get out of the recession quick smart.

Oh wait, it didn't, it fucked them in the recession for another 10 years and it took a world war for them to get out of it.
I was refering to the Harbour Bridge not the new deal.

Seriously though, if they insist on having a stimulus package

The best way to do it would be to cancel everyone's HECS debts, so young ppl can keep more of the money they're earning and use it for other things.

Here's my idea for a stimulus package, slash taxes by doing the following:

-privatise all government assets with the possible exception of the roads.
-end the war on drugs, prostitution, gambling, pornography and other victimless crimes.
-Sell off the ABC.
-Cut ALL corporate welfare and protectionism.
-Cut military spending.
-Massively reduce the size of government departments and the public service.

Argh crap. I didn't read the thread... just the stupid poll question.

The thread asks:

Do you think that a second stimulus package is needed to boost our economy?

The poll asks:

Do you think that a second stimulus package is Rudd's answer to recession?
To the second question, I said yes, and as has been made clear in the last few days by Rudd, his government is going to introduce another stimulus package. The poll question, and the thread question are two very different ones...

Don't give handouts... it didn't work.
Cut taxes and create jobs - ban outsourcing. I agree, increase taxes on imports. Support farmers.

But I wouldn't know anything :)

I think that a recession will put terrible social pressure on multiculturalism. Pauline Hanson pressure.
Also gays.

If we want Australia to maintain any aspect of its service based economy we need to open the borders tenfold and let people come in so that we can start manufacturing widgets or shit.

Immigrants bring jobs, they don't take them.
Frankly, my opinion of the economy is that it's witchcraft. All of it. Too many variable absolutes.

My amature opinion is that the recession is sorely needed, so we can do away with the meaningless pampering junk it's producing and really cut the fat off our whole culture. I want to do real stuff - gritty shit, like fight some Japs in self-defence and get a farm when I return. Sow my oats without protection. Real manly stuff. I want pain and blood and fucken a hard won crust and yerrfrr

what i dont understand about the first stimulus package is why the fuck didnt my family get 1K each for every child. im still cut up about it. our neighbor with 5 fucking kids, ended up getting 5K. probably doesn't pay half the taxes our family does.

im still fucking pissed.

agree with the end war on drugs cut military spendings but whats ABC gotta do with this :(

instead of giving out free moeny to kids who eventually goes to their parents then off to the pokies... government should start some major building project to create more jobs

Cutting military spending is both financially, realistically and politically difficult, if not impossible. Most of the money allocated to the military each year is spent before it is even allocated, meaning that demanding cuts in spending is pointless, because they would only come into effect in eighteen months or so. Few countries who want to cut defence spending actually do so, they simply don't bother increasing it and wait until inflation and economic growth catches up.
Also, Australia's military is already vastly overstretched, and despite our pulling out of Iraq, we may be getting involved in Afghanistan more so than before, which means that any savings (in money or personnel) from Iraq are nullified by a surge in Afghanistan. If we were to pull out or even cut spending to Afghanistan it would not only put our troops there at risk due to low-quality equipment and a lack of support, but also make us lose much of the political capital that we have in the international community.
