Fill me in on this. Does prelim actually matter to a convincing extent? If so (or not), why?

The results you obtain in year 11 doesn't matter, but the content you learn in year 11 carries over to year 12. i.e The maths you learn in prelim is crucial in understanding the content in year 12 and the same is for the science courses etc.

Your Year 11 marks won't matter in terms of ATAR calculation but some preliminary content does carry over to Year 12 content (mostly Maths in particular and some parts of Chemistry I think).

Some courses, like PDHPE and SDD do have ideas that are taught in yr 11 that get developed further with more understanding. PDHPE for example has the Ottawa Charter, which is taught in yr 11, is expanded on in yr 12, as there is almost a guarantee that a question in the HSC exam that will deal with the Ottawa Charter directly. As your ATAR wont be calculated from yr 11 marks, its not a good idea to blow yr 11 off, as it sets you up better in yr 12 and some universities use yr 11 marks for early entry.

Marks: no
Content: absolutely
A lot of what is done in yr11 provides the basis for what you will learn in yr12 - hence it is important to have at the very least a basic understanding of yr11 content to do well in yr12, for a majority of subjects
Even if its something as simple as essay writing, it is better to learn how to do it well in yr11 so you aren't spending half your yr12 assessments wondering how to do well

Marks no but the content and skills you learn is a yes! By the end of year 11 you are supposed to have pretty much perfected your answering techniques, essay writing skills etc.

As above, marks do not matter, however the content you learn in Prelim sets you up for Year 12
Also, you can be assessed on up to 30% Prelim content in maths during the HSC, so be aware of that.

Content wise not too much. However it is a great year to experiment different study and time management routines that may work best for you so you are ready for Year 12.

Content is important for maths.
Same goes towards Sciences, especially the foundations.

It's a good opportunity to learn your study habits - personally, I found Y11 to be the year where all the quiet kids who study hard seem to top. Now that they're doing subjects they're good at/have interest in, you slowly see other kids climbing. It's a good wake up call where effort sometimes trumps talent. (sometimes though)

I think Year 11 does matter because it builds up good study skills, content and attitude that will set you up well for year 12, the harder you try in year 11, the less you need to change your studying methods in year 12. You can still succeed in year 12 without trying too hard in year 11-but you will have to change more drastically and have more discipline to achieve the same result.

Use year 11 to build your habits for year 12.
During this time have fun, don't beat yourself up too much for messing up, so in year 12 you've already learned from your failures and you can efficiently study because you already have the habits mastered.
