Should I pick Eco instead of SOR (2u)? I go to a public school and SOR is not compulsory for us but I chose it because it sounds interesting. There aren't many people (less than 15) doing this subject coz this is offered for the first time.

I heard that Economics scales good and it's really useful. However, I've done Eco before in overseas (the content is the same, except of course the australian economy part) and I think it's pretty hard or maybe I just didn't really put much effort on it since I had a terror teacher and we had to do topic test every single week mehhh (yes i'm from an asian country)

I've chosen my subjects for year 11 and 12:

English Advanced
Mathematics (2U)
Chemistry
Biology
Legal Studies
Studies of Religion (2U) - SHOULD I CHANGE THIS ONE?

I'm aiming for an ATAR of 90+

I have until Friday this week to change. Thanks!

SOR 2 is apparently a really interesting course. However, it is very content filled.
Eco is useful if you want to do business and such.
What course are you looking at??? Eco would be more useful in most situations unless you're leaning towards philosophy, medicine, psychology or something ethically related...

TBH I'm still not sure about the course I want to do. ATM I'm considering to do a science degree after but then I'm not really sure yet. Am also considering business and law

SOR might be interesting but it is a lot of dates and names and statistics to memorise.
Eco still has statistics and stuff but I think they would scale fairly high, maybe eco more than SOR2u. SOR won't help you with a science degree or business but eco would help you in business so I guess there's that to weigh up. But you could be stuck with the subject for 2 years so I say go with the one you think you will do the best in and the one you will find most interesting.

I'd pick Eco way above SORII, but that's just personal.

But it doesn't sound like you are truly interested in eco so it wouldn't be wise for you to pick it. Pick what you are interested in, ignore scaling or trying to guess if it'll be more useful. Uni eco covers all you do in HS quickly.

I have done both for Year 11 and 12, and SORII is the best subject if not correctly. I was third in both, but SOR is super easy and isn't as content heavy as people make it out to be. The only content heavy bits are in Section I of the exam, and it is only MC and 2 Short Answers which covers 2 topics. And then there is just short answers, which come straight from the syllabus. Then there is two essay, which are pretty predictable as you will see if you chose it.
Do SORII, and if you absolutely hate it then just transfer to Economics if you hateeee it as you already have a background in it.

But SORII is the best and scales amazingly well if you get above 75. Do it.

In addition to what everybody else is saying, also consider that there is only < 15 people that will be doing SOR in your class, meaning less competition between your classmates and therefore you have a greater chance to top (or come close to topping) the class (as long as you study hard), in comparison to Economics which probably half your grade will be doing and hence a larger proportion of the smart cookies will also be competing with you.

I do both Eco and SOR (but only one unit), and I like both of them. The year 12 course for eco is WAY more interesting than the prelim course. But, if you really don't like eco, don't do it. For me, it's one of those subjects that if you don't like it, don't do it. The SOR course is quite interesting as well, from what I've heard from people that do it, but a LOT more content is covered in it. Although, it doesn't scale as well as eco, if you enjoy it and find it interesting and are willing to study, then you're bound to do well. So good luck in whatever decision you make! :D

TRUE! :) And a lot of people will do it as 1 unit for prelim because they have extensions and drop it in in year 12.

Don't let the hype about scaling bother you. As long as you apply yourself consistently throughout the HSC, doing any subject will yield good results.

Do you have to do a lot of researching in Eco? What are the exams like?

^Nope, I only had one research task on RAB. At my school assessment, there is only one research task for yr 12 also.

The exams were all pretty similar, MC, short answer and then longer response.

The yr 11 eco course is not as interesting as the HSC course. (You may wonder why I dropped it then lol). But I seriously looked ahead the HSC course and it had quite interesting topics, much more exciting than prelim. I only dropped the course because I believed I would like EE2 and His Ext better. (Haha I was half right/half wrong-I will prob drop His Ext)

EDIT: Also as a heads up, if you think Eco is anything like Commerce you'll be sorely mistaken lol

Economics is very much grounded in theory but an understanding of current events and how that theory can be applied to such cases will do you well. It isn't so much a research-intensive subject, at least in high school, but if you want to get the best marks you will need to do some personal research.

I did Commerce in Year 10 and absolutely got bored with the business part itself lol. Enjoyed the law part that's why I chose legal studies.

Another thing, a lot of people in my year pick SOR 1 because they have extensions. Hence 12 units, and they'll drop it in year 12. Would the school still continue to run the subject if there are like less than 8 people doing SOR II for year 12?

As stated before, don't have a misconception about Economics based on how Commerce was in Year 10. They are nothing alike.

In regards to a school dropping certain subjects from running in Year 12, I don't believe they would be able to do that provided that students are disadvantaged from other students dropping the subject. A commitment made to run a subject in Year 11 should carry over to Year 12. Regardless, I'm not too sure how transitions between SOR I and SOR II work so a question like that should be directed to your head of faculty.

Honestly if you find SOR intersting then try it out. I never touched SOR but done Economics in Year 11 and found it tiring especially with legal studies weighing me down. Up to you because your subjects are heavily science and commerce related.
