Anyway, it's all about The Beatles. Still. No band has revolutionised music as greatly as they have. No songwriter has ever been better than Lennon. A Day In The Life, Across The Universe, Julia...each of these is a masterwork of music that had not been touched before (and, arguably, since). There really is no argument as far as I am concerned, with the only band anywhere near touching them being the Rolling Stones (though Beach Boys' Pet Sounds is maybe a better album than anything by The Beatles. Maybe).

As for solo artists, it's all about Prince. The man plays over 40 instruments. He is a brilliant songwriter. Purely awesome. Madonna is also up there. Redefined bubblegum pop.
