This is a question from a 2003 James Ruse assessent paper.

2. The formation of ozone in the troposphere is due to which situation?
(A) Presence of the very short UV radiation acting on an oxygen molecule
(B) Presence of medium short frequency UV radiation acting on nitric oxide molecules
(C) Presence of low frequency UV radiation acting on nitrogen dioxide molecules
(D) Presence of medium high frequency UV acting on hydrocarbons

What is the answer and why?

If I remember correctly C).

The UV light strikes a Nitrogen Dioxide molecule releasing an oxygen radical which can then bond with oxygen to form ozone.

But it is definately B or C. But C is more specific so I like it more.

The answer should be C.

NO2 + sunlight --> NO + O

O + O2 ---> O3

The formation of ozone in the troposphere is due to sunlight (uv) acting upon NO2 due to combustion in cars and factories, etc. Hence, pollution from cars causes ozone.

Combustion in Cars

N2 + O2 --> 2NO

2NO + O2 --> 2NO2

Well medium short frequency is just not happening.

Frequency is a measure of cycles per second how can you have short cycles per second.

i read it is due to short wavelength UV radiation reacting with NO2 and then u all know wat happens after that. but short wavelength UV radiation would be would be high frequency wouldnt it?

Yeah not much makes it way down though, and there is no medium short frequency you dont have long or short fequency.

i think its the first one, this is an answer for the formation of ozone from 2003 sydney grammar trial

O2 + UV --> 20

2O + 2O2 --> 2O3

The question is asking for troposphere, not stratosphere. It is produced like that in the stratosphere.

Hahaha I can't decide which is worse, this or shipwrecks.

I like the first two topics though:p

I don't mind shipwrecks or the 1st two topics- but CM & M...yuk. I really hate the water quality part.

Worse part of monitoring and management is the water stuff. I mean, who actually cares? Oh my! Our water's been flocculated! WOW!

Order of favourability:
1. Production of materials
2. Monitoring and management
3. Acidic environment

I refuse to list shipwrecks in the list of "favourability".

Acidic environment would rock if i could do the calculations. And it was a pretty boring topic anyway.

I don't mind acidic environment- except the titrations, and like you said, the calculations.
