For MATS1101 I have:

MATS1101 / MATS9520 ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY & MATERIALS:
Needed anyway and costs $15.

Chemistry the Molecular Nature of Matter and Change 4e:
Electronic copy LOL (40MB).

SI Chemical Data 6E:
$35 and because it contains useful data I can look up straight away

ENGINEERING MATERIALS (VOL 1) 3E:
~$75, is it worth it?
How much did you rely on it?
my friends doing mats1101 this session for first time and didnt buy this and she says oohhhh not worth it!

BINGO!

oy but what did you use to help you complete your lab reports?
the sheet itself, textbook and internet?

but oy Omium you must be a pretty damn tough guy, I bet you named yourself after Osmium coz i saw in teh materials textbook that Osmium has a relatively huge density and modulus.

EDIT: OMG they changed lab 2 ... some stuff wont be similar but how you do it e.g. conditional formatting still applies.
could you upload that?

for online tutorials you mean the WebCT ones?
it must be
Home Page › Materials Strand › Activities › Tutorials
lol i cant think of anything else to go further than 'warmer' to find the origin of your username.
The Online tutorials are the ones where some of them are assessable and some arent. Youl basically do them online, and then theres a test at the end. some are assessable.
They are descriptive and interactive.

Oh and something else.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

If you wana kill the midsession and final exam. DO THE Self-Test QUESTIONS.

edit: wow crosky lied. the materials book was 'useful' coz of the data they provide and my friend convinced me that you can find it easily on the internets, and here so do you.
internet - 2, textbook - 0
lol every few lectures he would mention that its good as you can "quickly find information".

lol they give him an "honourable" mention in the book so i guess he wants everybody to buy it and see :p

Trust me, DONT BUY ANY TEXTBOOKS WHATSOEVER FOR MATERIALS.

also, don't go to chem lectures untill the 8th week of the term.
(weeks 8-12, you get a new lecturer for organic chemistry so you should go then)

The first 8 weeks of chem lectures, the dude just reads off a powerpoint WORD BY WORD, but his lecture notes are really detailed so dont waste your time and go to his lectures. just download the lecture notes.

Well I went pretty gay with the self-test questions but I'll keep trying again and again.
For some reason even though I did HSC Chem, I lost most of my chemistry skills :(

LOL this explains why kids leave after 10 minutes or so for the chem guy.
but then theres a group project in materials, what did you and your group rely on?
damn i actually bought every textbook except materials volume 2 and chem textbook .... booohoohoo!

I used the internet. My group members used the textbook "ashby and jones materials" since you have it you can put it to good use :)

Oh, also, if your doing the motor boat. you can have a "look" (wink wink) at my assignment. i still got it.

we dont know our assignment yet ... my group is apparently all guys how typical.

one of the most annoying things in engineering is the severe lack of w0m3n.
"we have too many sausages and not enough onions" as a friend says.

but yeah how many assignments have you done for mats1101?

p.s. ill take your advice and skip the chem lecture to do the bloody tensile quiz then thats due friday 11:59pm instead of the weekend.

lol, My name starts with "A". In my group work for first semester. no joke 7/8 of my group members names were "Andrew, or Andy"

(Not a lot of girls names start with "a" )

3 Group work assignments for MATS1101.

First one you pick CLASSES of materials for an object, its pretty basic.
Second one you review another groups analysis
Third one and you specific materials for your object in Task 1

Try to pick an object for the assessment that has easy-to-find info (People who picked "hole puncher" found it very hard)

Edit: PM me your email

0.2% proof stress .. but is the 0.02 in millimetres or metres?

edit: bloody hell, my values of yield strength, elastic modulus, ultimate tensile strength and so on are way off from the textbook.
im sure 1kN = 1000N and 1mm = 0.001m

Oh, that one is very irritating.

It took me a while to understand 0.2% proof stress as nobody would explain it properly

This is how it works.

Where your strain is (on the x-axis) for your FIRST value, simply put a dot 0.2% of your first strain value

(NOTE THIS SHOULD BARELY BE OFF THE ORIGIN)

Then draw a line parrallel to the elastic region going through this dot your marked previosly

Then where your line hits the curve. (Record the stress value at that point)
And thats your 0.2% proof stress

I advise that you look up ALL your answers on wikipedia, and just put your figures slightly off.

Worked for me :)

lol my tutor for engg1811 isnt tutoring for session 2 anymore.
cse maybe wasnt happy with him with all the delays that we experiences.

k i geddit ...

youngs modulus is giving me the shits
im even taking the gradient of it at the elastic region and gives me an answer thats almost a hundred off...

but i heard photopat doesnt mind all material labs.
other peoples intervene with future labs and i just found out they arent due today.
yay!
lol, yer.

The best thing ive ever seen in my entire uni life is MOLTEN ALUMINIUM.
it looks so freaking awesome. the dude dropped some and immediately (accidetnally) stepped on it and it had already solidifies.

but the shinyness and the colour was so awesome.

(You should do this in Materials lab 3)

oh shit thats hot stuff cant wait to see.
thats why i like scientific or engineering experiments.

but how to make happen...

Materials labs are all pretty awesome. (minus the tensile ones)

Chemistrry labs are very stupid and very hard

and how i have to go to that dalton computer lab for prelab shit and they have no internets for first years fuck that.

p.s. create more fantastic threads for our entertainments lol.

Forbid, why was the other thread locked?

I cant believe that happened, Were the staff going nuts?

I once dropped 12 mol/L NaOH on my hand, i didnt realise it was strong untill my hands went a little purple and my nails and arms felt like they were on fire
