Inspired by loq's pubs/clubs thread. I can't add much, since I pretty much just eat at Oriental Kitchen, but I'm sure someone else can fill this in for me :p.

ASIAN
Oriental Kitchen - Garema Place Civic
Nice asian restaurant in Garema Pl. They sell everything from Chinese dishes to laksas. Not cheap, but not too expensive either (a laksa costs $12). A good place to eat if you're hungry but just can't be bothered to cook.

Imperial Court - Just off campus, behind the Jolimont Centre
Small Yum Cha place, they wheel a few trolleys of stuff around and also have a menu that you can order from. The only Yum Cha restaurant that I know of that actually has service. They put a little too much chilli on their chicken feet though. Youch :p

New Shanghai Restaurant - Dickson, 15min walk from Fenner
Large Yum Cha place, reminds me of a few of the Sydney restaurants, specifically Dragon Star Seafood (the one on top of Market City) in all of its craptasticness. I went during peak hour for Saturday lunch and there wasn't much variety, what little food there was wasn't very good and they watered down their beer. NOBODY WATERS DOWN MY BEER. We didn't have to wait too long to get a seat though.

ITALIAN
That pizza place next to Electric Shadows, just down from Garema Pl
I can't remember it's name but they serve MASSIVE, reasonably priced gourmet pizzas. 1 large pizza for $25 feeds two.

COFFEE
Milk & Honey/Essen/Guss's - Garema Place Civic
Eh, coffee. These three cafes are mashed together and are open till quite late. Later than any other cafes I know of anyway. A good place to meet friends, particularly if you have friends who haven't had the decency to turn 18. Often filled with people from college. Also filled with smelly hippies, who may or may not be from college.

Gods Cafe - Union Court
The best coffee at the ANU. Though like anything on campus, it isn't cheap.

As a note there is a huge concentration of resturants in Dickson and they stick the menus on the windows so you can wander around and decide which is great.

Au Lac: Located in dickson this is the 'fake meat' restuarant, the prices are very reasonable - especially the laksa. And it is pretty much impossible to distinguish (in most cases) that you are eating fake meat.

Taj Agra: Also in dickson, this is my favourite Indian restuarant. They specialise in North Indian food, prices are reasonable and the ambience is quite nice.

The Purple Pickle: They sell some great burgers at some (comparitive to other campus food) good prices. This the God's and the campus bakery are the only three places on campus I like and they are all privately owned....coincidence?

Pyschadeli: Located just of campuss (corner of marcus clarke street and barry drive - in the base of the St George Building). I recommend the vegetarian baguette.

The indian place upstairs in garema place, near Milk+Honey, Essen's, Guss's etc: Can't remember the prices but the food is awesome.

Tilly's: Located at Lyneham shops, this is one of Canberra's great cafes. Frequented by students, professionals, alternatives, etc. Prices (especially for alcohol) arn't brilliant, however the food is very good.

oooo, and if we're going to Dickson you gotta go to that little noodle place around the corner from subway! $8.80 for takeaway that lasts two meals! yummy. and yes, Zeffers' rocks. And there is all the ethiopian ones down that strip too, apparently quite nice but i reckon they'd be dear.

The ethiopean isnt that dear and is incredibly filling.

The Thai place near Elders: Not a fan, I've had far better thai at better prices.

I LOVE Thai food - and there are heaps of Thai restaurants in Canberra, but I have yet to find one that isn't too expensive AND serves good food.

Likewise....

When I was still living at home (in western sydney) there was an excellent thai resturant that was also inexpensive just 10minutes away...

Anyone with info on good thai in canberra please step foreward.

Can somebody give me a run-down of the vegetarian places, or places which offer decent vegetarian food?

I once went to a asian vegetarian (possibly vegan) restaurant in dickson (which is pretty close to the ANU) and from what I remember it was pretty decent. There's also a vegetarian restaurant in Ainslie called Bernadette's that's supposed to be very good, though I'm yet to go there.

My absolute favourite restaurant in Canberra is Rama's Fijian Indian restaurant at the Pearce shops (which is on my street, and where a lot of my friends work, so I'm sort of biased)... great vegetarian stuff too - vegetable kofta, vegetable pakora and vegetable samosas are my favourites.
Not that it's near the ANU or anything, but it's great stuff and reasonably priced, so I think it deserves a mention.

The vegan restuarant in dickson would've been Au lac (near zeffers).
