What is considered a good Hard drive size and speed, i currently have an 80G 7200RPM WD harddrive, and how important is buffer size

Depends on your usage.

Speed: 7200rpm standard, don't go lower than this.
Size: 80gb+ is fine for most people, who will never use that much, however if you need more you wouldn't be asking this question
Buffer Size: Not really that important, all the top Seagate, Western Digital and Maxtor hard drives have nicely allocated sizes.

Yeah, i think i need more HD, my current drive has 8mb buffer, and i think i can put in another secondary harddrive, could u recommend on. i have a Omni 4 5.25 sloted drive, with 2 3.25 slots.

it also depends on what you do with your computer to what hdd you get.
If you use your computer alot of gaming, or programs that acces your hard drive alot, a SATA drive (if your motherboard supports it) might be the way to go.
If your motherboard dosn't support SATA another 80Gb should do you fine, as your current hdd is reasonably new - it shouldnt die any time soon. If your a serious gamer, you might consider a 120Gb as games are beginning to take up more and more space (Eg UT2004's 5 disc install).
I've got a WD 120Gb SATA - partitioned into 3 partitions, and I noticed the difference when I upgraded from my previous 40gb PATA drive. Ive got 2 40gb drives, one for all my music and other media, and the 2nd for backup, which holds my ghost image and important files.
Price wise, SATA drives have come down quite alot in the past 6 months, I payed $170ish for my 120Gb drive, you can get them now for arround $145 if you look arround hard enough. An 80Gb PATA drive will set you back arround $100 for either WD or Seagate.

I have 120GB but I think 40 should be sufficient if you don't download anime/TV shows and etc(big data types). IF you ahve a small HDD you can always get an external one

I've got 120GB, with 45.5GB left. There is about 35GB of movies, 13GB of music
I remember my old computer had 9GB haha!

and way back when HDD's cost you $1+ per Mb!

btw, whatever happened to those 400Gb Hitachi HDD's? they came out 2 yrs ago but still not here?

ive got a wholesale price list (because i do computer repairs) and the largest hdd i can get a price on from that list is 250Gb .. so im not sure about anything bigger! 400Gb is huge!!!! Who knows how you would fill that for home use!

They were huge though, because hardly anyone had broadband at this stage.

You can get 300s at the moment, I think the 400s are not over here due to the 300s only touching down recently. Plus the US market is buying a lot of them.

SAN and NAS are over priced for home use, might as well build a cheap system yourself.
