Ok. Ive never set up a LAN before. I want to connect my laptop up to my main computer for file transfer. I have network cards and the cable between the two is connected. However it says, "network cable unplugged" in my network settings. How do i configure it to make it work. Ive already tried the wizard through XP. I know i have to configure IP settings and stuff. Someone help me please! :(

Oh dear. I hate windows network wizard. But I've done this before. Specifically for my tablet Pc and my desktop (my TPC can use my desktop's CD drive!)

Well, anyway... restart both computers.
Run the wizard first on the PC which is the host. Then on the slave.
Restart both computers in this order: turn off slave, restart host, turn on slave.

And see how you go. Oh, and I forgot to ask... you don't have firewalls, right? Turn off XP firewalls and software firewalls.

For me, all that IP stuff was done automatically.

Meh. I know a fair bit about ares of computing, but networks are not my speciality.

Last thing: XP help WAS actually pretty helpful for me whenever something went wrong with my network. Try it.

Umm.. I'm at work so I don't remember where to find these settings.. it's all in control panel / network connections / local area connection somewhere though.

* Make sure they're on the same domain (default is MSHOME)
* You can set the IPs if you like and you're not planning to connect to a switch.. just set them to 192.168.0.x where x is between 0 and 255, i just use 1 and 2 :D - or you can generate them automatically
* Turn off firewalls - should be in system settings (right click my computer and go to properties)
* Restart both computers, I usually turn the host one on first but it shouldn't matter .. i don't think

by the sounds of things you are using the wrong cable. i know this because i had exactly the same problem. are you sure the cable you are using is a "crossover cable"? a normal ethernet cable will not work for your setup. a crossover cable is the same as the ethernet one except it has different wiring.
You should be able to get it from Tandy or Dick Smith

u can get 1-2m STRAIGHT-THROUGH UTP CAT5 cables from dodgy $2 stores for... $2!!!

don't have to go to Tandy, etc.

of if you live in the Hornsby region, i'll make one for you and give to you for free :p

ok the networking issue:
Once you've got your cable sorted.

Sorry Phoebe, you probably meant 'workgroup', not 'domain'. not many ppl have proper domains at home :p
