I don't think homosexuals should be able to marry nor do I think hetero atheists should be able to. The government needs to just bring in civil unions and say that if you want to get married in the church do that, otherwise get a civil union. Also all the right winged gays I know earn a lot of money, and if you're rich than the coalition are the ones that are going to look after you.

Nobody is forcing the churches to marry people. If they have no problem marrying atheists or gays, then fuckign let them and mind your own business.

That is completely true, dude why do you need to get so hostile? Notice I started the post with 'I think'. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But peoples rights should be respected. My question is why would homosexuals want to be part of a practice by institutions which condemn them? If gays can get married in a church that is happy to do it than good on us but marriage is a sacrament and should have been confined to the church. (That is my opinion). I'm sure you may think differently but there's no need for hostility.

Wait, why?

Marriage hasn't always been a 'religious' thing. The Abrahamic religions adopted it but they didn't create it and it shouldn't be seen as something that belongs to them.

If you're a fucking gay couple and want to get married, find a fucking church that will marry you. The church should be seen as a private entity which should hold the absolute right to decide who it wants to marry and not marry.

Like for fucks sake, gays talk about fucking rights, but what about the rights of the church?

My view exactly. And if you want to think about it from a rights point of view , collective human rights are meant to be more important than an individual.
If you're commenting on the origin of marriage then what was the origin?

It pre-dates recorded history. The Ancient Greeks did it, so did the Romans and the ancient Chinese were doing it around 5000 B.C. as well. Plus, interestingly enough, the Nuer tribe in Sudan allow for same-sex marriage too.

Basically, it's been around since before the traditional institutions of religion that we have today. So by saying that we must allow them to control the definition of marriage is bizarre because they adopted it from many other groups.

We would claim that the union of man and woman is a natural event ordained by God since the creation of woman.

The point isn't physically getting married in a church, but being recognised as legally being married by the 'state'.

Marriage in the way which we define it kind of was shaped by the church though. In the cultures your speaking of marriage was used to basically make women property which was possibly previously the case in the churches but isn't any longer, obviously.

So you mean that the church redefined marriage to make it so women weren't property anymore?

Gasp.

So what's wrong with them redefining marriage to make it between two people instead of a man and a woman?

It clashes with their principles. Anyway I don't see why homosexuals have such a problem with not being able to marry if they're granted civil unions which are just like marriage but with a different name. A lot of homosexuals need to get off ttheir soap boxes and realise they're not always being persecuted.

The issue with civil unions, and I agree, is if marriage = civil union then aren't people just being very precious over a simple word? And marriage these days is become more of a secular thing anyways and again, as pointed out by another poster above, gay marriage is about being legally recognised by the state, not by every religion out there. They aren't asking the state to make churches marry them, just to allow them the right to marry within society as a whole.

AFAIK it's currently the church's prerogative to allow people to marry in their church anyways. I know some religions/individual churches won't let (or frown upon) a couple get married if they aren't of the same faith.

They are being over protective of that word. Okay maybe a lot of religions condemn homosexuality and homosexuals hate them for that or whatever. But the problem is that homosexuals are also worried about the word. Religious individuals say marriage is sacred and homosexuals say that by not allowing them marriage the government and society general is saying that they can't share the same love or sustain relationships like heterosexual couples. From where I'm standing it's all about the word, and this is why it's ridiculous. Implement civil unions which are legally recognized equally to marriage and tell everyone to stop whinging about their rights.

Yeah... Nowhere in that post did you convince me that marriage, as a word and thus an institution, belongs to religion and thus, homosexuals can only get civil unions. I could've said the pretty much same thing and then changed the last sentence to "Just let homosexuals get married anyways".

Also, your statement "Okay maybe a lot of religions condemn homosexuality and homosexuals hate them for that or whatever." can be applied both ways. Condemning the practice often leads to religious groups fostering homophobia to the individual.

Finally, "Religious individuals say marriage is sacred and homosexuals say that by not allowing them marriage the government and society general is saying that they can't share the same love or sustain relationships like heterosexual couples." This is fact and that's great but you're not really making a point from it.
