Would be much easier to graph |x+2| and |3x-1| then do the addition of ordinates thing, but that's 4U...
Or you could consider the points where the graph will turn, e.g. for the question above, at x = -2 and x = 1/3
then you sub a value before x = -2 and after x = 1/3
then you can draw the graph. It'll continue as a straight line all the way through btw
