Re: How to excel in senior year studies (yr 11/12)

Hey strawberrye, we have a task for English coming up that I feel is almost unfair. Unseen question on Discovery, have to do an essay on it in relation to The Tempest as well as an unknown song that will be played twice. I kind of feel disadvantaged because I don't do music so I don't know all thr fancy words and how to pick up stuff like most of the other people. Any advice on how I should prepare for this? It's about 3 months away but should I be really kind of diving into music techniques and stuff? Or is that not necessary? Any thoughts would be really appreciated, have a great Easter!

Hi Swagmeister,
I hope you are enjoying your long Easter break. To be honest, life is unfair, and considering that most people in your cohort is likely to be in the same situation as you, you will have to learn to adapt rather than complain, after all, the teacher is unlikely to change the nature of an assessment task just because of the complaints of a minority. Although songs admittedly are a less usual form of related text to analyse, they are not impossible, I think just focus on listening to the lyrics of the song and draw on literary techniques, as for technical things like the pitch and what not, I am sure in the context of English, teachers would be lenient to not be so pedantic (you should ask your teacher of course to make sure).

At the end of the day, one thing is clear, you have to focus on answering the given question. It is not about being the best analyser of a particular text, it is about developing on the spot thinking and a firm grasp of the complexities of the discovery rubric which will allow you to connect your prescribed and the song THEMATICALLY/CONCEPTUALLY during the exam time to answer the given question specifically. Given it is 3 months away, I think you are overtly anxious-just make sure you have a strong grasp of key discovery themes, quotes, techniques and effects in The Tempest and practice relating it to different unseen texts and you will be fine-practice makes perfect:)

Just one question
The night before the exam, how much study should I do If I believe I already know most of the content?
like, should I still go over EVERYTHING

Chill the night before and just read over your summary and don't stress yourself.

You should go over the things you are still not completely confident in-I don't think you need to go over content you already know at the back of your head, but it also depends on the subject that you are studying for as well.

I think having a thorough read of this guide and following my tips and suggestions on how to formulate a good study timetable or to-do list will set you on a very strong path to optimise your work ethic. At the end of the day, don't quantify your study by hours, but by the efficiency of your study. That's another reason why I tend to prefer to-do-lists in determining my study efficiency. Have a look at my tips for different subjects, you could well apply them in year 10-the earlier you do, the better you study worth ethic and results will become. Having an optimistic attitude and striving for academic consistency is also keys to long term academic success. Hope this helped a bit:)

I'm sorry if you've been asked this before. What's the go with practical assessments for physics/chemistry? How do you do well in these? Are teachers looking for accuracy if you had to, for example, weigh products and then weigh reactants to see how accurate you were? What are common shortfalls on these?

Hey, I understand maths needs to be studied daily to grasp concepts. What about chemistry? Should I study it like maths daily?

On the first page of this thread-if you scroll down carefully-I have a section specifically on how to excel in english-so have a read of that section, and if you have anymore specific questions, feel free to ask.

It depends on how familiar you are, ideally, yes, but in the realities of assessments and assignments of a school term, study chemistry regularly, whether it be particular days every week, or over the weekend.

I'm sorry if you've been asked this before. What's the go with practical assessments for physics/chemistry? How do you do well in these? Are teachers looking for accuracy if you had to, for example, weigh products and then weigh reactants to see how accurate you were? What are common shortfalls on these?
In this thread, I also have multiple sections on how to excel in practicals for science, they are either on the first page of the thread or in one the succeeding pages-have a scroll through and have a read through these relevant sections. If you have any further concerns, feel free to ask. I think the most safe way to excel in practical exam is to actually read through any marking criteria in the assessment notification if you are given one and try your best to satisfy all the marking criteria.

Re: How to excel in senior year studies (yr 11/12)

I go straight to the library right after school (40 min round trip) for about ~3.5-4hrs pure studying non stop then I go home and eat dinner for 1 hr. I then continue to study for another 1-2 hrs in my room and after that I just chill. My friends thinks that I'll burn out sooner or later if I keep going at this rate. What is the likelyhood of me burning out? the thing is I just don't see myself burning out. I don't feel mentally tired but my back and neck is kinda sore haha but I don't study as hard in the weekends though

Don't worry too much about what your friends think-you sound like you have established a really strong work routine-just do what works best for you:)-you should see some deserving results in time:)

It's not about the number of hours, it is about how efficient your study is-i.e. how much you get done in your study time.

Unfortunately I won't give you a number, because as I said, it's always better to measure your study by how much you get done rather than how long you spend studying. One could study very slowly for 8 hours but absorb half of someone who concentrates very well for 2 hours. I like to do things by to-do lists, so I never measure how much time I study or not study.
