We only had 70...its done on a percentage basis so the size of the school doesn't matter.

I was told it was NOT done like this, and thats why it is unfair and inaccurate.

Well the list on the first page of this thread was done like that, coz my school was on it and it definitely would not be otherwise! :)

It's more likely to be unfair and inaccurate because the number of students achieving top bands has nothing to do with UAIs (which, let's face it, is what most people are really after).

In fact, considering you can't compare bands between courses, you can't add them up, and you really can't do anything with them at all, the whole ranking system is quite invalid. I guess it's the best they can do. :p

oh wait.... i found a more accurate result of our HSC in 2002.

56% over 90 UAI.
117 mentions in the Distingused Achievers list.
28% over 95.
Median UAI score 85.5.

i bet that school ranking list in NOT accurate or they just screwed with the statistics of our school.

It's accurate for wat it is

They calculate the rankings based on the number of merit list mentions divided by the number of exams sat to yield a percentage

ie...James Ruse sat about 1000 exams, and they got about 550 of those exams in Band 6, getting 55%
NSG, 2nd on the list, sat about 700 exams, and got about 300 on the merit list, getting 45%
etc etc

what does your school rank have to do with your HSC marks and UAI? does it effect these?

nothing whatsoever
these rankings are formed as a result of the schools performance in the HSC exams

When it comes to using for marks to determine the UAI, School's are not taken into consideration.

But, where a school is ranked can make a difference to your attitude towards work. If you are surrounded by smart students and competition is high then you have better motivation to do well, whereas being in a poor school can result in bad atmosphere/environment and hence less motivation to study.
