Hey guys, as i am your new Mod, i don't wanna just filter posts, and do the typical job, instead i wanna make this forum a little bit more refined, rather than just having the experienced computing users come in, i wanna make this forum for helping some users with minor technical difficulties as well. So i thought it will be a good idea to Pin a new thread that allows users to add their tips in and tricks for computing, i'd like your vote on it, and please be serious about it.

Thanks...

Yeah not a bad idea, I'll obviously have 3 tips and tricks threads

each one for different platforms

Windows Client/ Server

Unix/Linux/Various Mods

Mac

As i know we have numerous non-Windows users

I voted for no actually. As much as I am in support of the IT stuff forum, I don't believe it to be 'absolutely' necessary.

With multiple sub-sections, it will only become confusing (in my opinion). Imagine having "n00bs" come in, as they are inexperienced, and posting in sections and threads which are totally irrelevant, that only creates more work for you, as Moderator.

I do, however, understand your ideology behind the refinement of IT stuff.

I think that if you have a "tips and tricks" thread, or even sections/threads such as:

Mac
Unix/Linux
Windows

then it will create confusion, even though they are categorically arranged and sorted, I still feel that:

a) most people will post repeats, or quote from other websites

or

b) most wont bother to read, only adding to the overall confusion.

That's my 2 cents, but i'm sure others will disagree with my points.

IT stuff is general, and if you keep refining and synthesising it, you'll end up going through thread after subsection after subsection to find anything pertinent.

I think it is a good idea and voted "that will be great! (Yes)" because when I have computer problems/questions and post it on computer forums people get frustrated with my lack of knowledge and tend to use technical language that I do not understand:(. People on this forum seem to answer questions in an easier way so I can understand:).

Well Huy i can see where your heading, but!, the thing is it will be just a pinned thread, saying "Tips and Tricks for Windows" or whatever platform it may be. But none the less, i'd be juding it on the amount of feedback from users before proceeding

I totally agree...

For example:

WinXP Tweak, Hacks and Tips Collection
Win9x Tweak, Hacks and Tips Collection
Handy Software

That's just one forum off the top of my head. It's unecessary in this forum IMHO.

Thanks Soliah :)

I mean, it is a great idea in theory, but in practice it isn't contributing in a sense to what IT stuff (and the intended purpose) of the forum is all about.

For example, "general IT help" would be my description of this forum.

But it would be really convoluted if you had:

* Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME tips and tricks
* Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 tips and tricks
* Post your favourite application
* Post your system specs
* Ideas for the IT stuff forum
* Troubleshooting in linux
* What is your favourite Linux/Unis OS
* AMD vs Intel battles
* Windows XP vs Windows 2000

I know that they are all relevant, and they should all have a place, but for the 'ordinary' user, say for a HSC student who has problems sometimes with computers, IT, they may not be able to read every tweak, hack or tip, let alone know which OS they are using! (sorry, but it is sometimes the case...).

Of course, some users may have a slight understanding of what pieces of hardware they have, but they might not be able to know which drivers are being used, version numbers, applications installed, and so on to be able to "hack" (via registry entries and so on, customising and configurations).

But of course, this is open to everybody and everyone is able to contribute.

I'd hate to see "IT stuff" become "Non-School (IT Stuff)" if you know what I mean? :)

Actually the primary reason is to reduce iterated threads from resurrecting, a pinned section where users can read up on before questioning is a good way to cut down the cluttering of obsolete threads from re-occuring.

Obsolete threads are great, IMHO.

If I need to find anything, other people's past problems, I think to myself: (what a wonderful world... :p)

"Hey, I remember someone else having a similar problem..."
and I go back to IT stuff and find the "single" thread, instead of a single post within pages and pages of "a bigger" thread.

Not many people post in this forum, compared to other (older, well established) forums, so I don't believe clutter/junk to be accumulating here in the IT stuff forum, but in future, perhaps this will be an issue. :)

The thing is alot of the tips that would be in such a thread probably wouldn't be relevant to many of the problems that the average user would run into. As Huy said, the average user probably would have NFI when it comes to their PC.

A idea would be to post a sticky, titled "Read Before Posting" telling new users to first search for any queries, perhaps links to common problems etc.

Did you think it said "various moderators" ?
ie Mods on BOS

Winston was talking about various mods/versions/flavours
Red Hat
Suse
Mandrake
Slackware
Debian

etc?

Or was it a joke too? LOL

I think you already knew this... so... now I feel awkward.

Ok i'll take that into consideration, and do that first and see if there's any iterated threads

As a mod, I think you should only stivky threads that become imporatant/intereting, don't predefine threads ...
