hmmm.... i expected a little more innovation from apple....

randomness isn't exactly new. I guess apple does save alot of money by having no screen, no fm radio, no voice recorder, thus the lowish price.

i spent $400 on my 15gb ipod 3gen, this "4gen" shit costs MORE

The fourth generation iPod is no more expensive than the third generation. The price change comes from the hard drive capacity of the player. Presumably at the time of purchase, your 15gb was $400. This would place the 20gb model at $500, and the 40gb at roughly $650, and I use the term roughly because this price has changed since I last checked .

Voice recording is already possible on a 3rd gen iPod running Linux. The capacity is there for the iPod (recording through the official iPod headphones, no less), it's just a matter of Apple releasing it. And what's wrong with the firmware at the moment ? Download the update, hit go and it upgrades your firmware =).

I would like to see improved earphones though, they hurt after a while in your ears =\
