Honestly, which toilet cleaner will actually earn more than a lawyer if he does not own the toilet cleaning tycoon.
You should check the pay for lawyers. Excepting like the top 10%, their pay is pretty average, both for a normal fullt-time adult but also for somebody with a university degree.

can we just settle it at the fact that it depends on what course you're doing and which option is more suitable for that.
First intelligent thing I've heard you say. It's shame you actually still think you're 'better' than everybody else, though.

Tafe is not necessarily for the dumb, nor is uni necessarily for the intelligent. I'd rather go to barber school than pay $50,000 for an applied basketweaving degree from one of our domestic degree mills / PR factories.

Our unis' entry standards have fallen to the point where they'll welcome anybody with a pulse and a fat wallet. A degree in itself means squat. Smart people are realising that solid vocational skills are becoming more scarce and valued in the workplace. We need more tradies, not degree qualified shop assistants.

Who is smarter?

The plumber, who after 4 years study has a guaranteed job earning $50k+. This can easily double or more if he chooses to move into mining in a remote area or starts his own business after a few years.

Or the arts student who after 3 years study...

I think some people go to TAFE because they can't get into uni.
Then again, as some have said here, some go to TAFE because uni doesn't offer the course that they want to do.
Some go to TAFE because they are better suited to the way teaching is done there ie less one-way lecture and more of the interactive learning that unis tend to do more of in tutes and pracs.

Perhaps the best example of how TAFE isn't necessarily for the dumb comes from a friend of mine: He didn't get into uni, so did a variety of TAFE certs, got a job in IT for a prestigous company, got promoted to management over degreed workers, then finished a TAFE diploma and got accepted straight into a postgrad course in IT mgt. Now he's got a Master's and lectures part time at uni. Ask him what he thinks and he'll tell you that TAFE gave him the best start he could have been given. And no, he's definitely not dumb!!!

A university more or less sets you off in a particular field. It starts you off in a direction. TAFE more or less trains you for a particular job. So it doesn't broaden your options like uni does.

But to answer the question simply, no. University is not for everyone, Some of the smartest people I know are enrolled in TAFE because they didn't like the school/university environment. However, I do agree that on a whole the people at university are more intelligent .

Definitely. Maybe.

No.

Really depends.

Obviously anyone who uses tafe as a means of getting to uni can't be seen as 'dumb'. Anyone who utilizes government resources to open doors/options for themselves must posses some degree of intelligence. So I suppose that it's only those who go to tafe for the sake of going, or don't intent to extend themselves any further than a certificate in X that are the 'dumb' ones (as they would rather camp on the hills than reach for the stars. Fuck, that was such a pathetic attempt at incorporating an inspiring proverb).

Oh well, 8:41am time for bed. Dammit, I mean school =[

agreed.

1. dumb is subjective
2. just because TAFE has a lot of "dumb" people doesn't mean its for the dumb

This thread is shithouse.

Tafe is a vocational training institute, and at that it's one of the best in the world. It's not competing with the universities, it's focus is completely different, and it performs it's role in an excellent fashion.

No one should feel any shame for attending tafe. Any and all higher education should be encouraged.

Attitudes like those displayed in this thread are why a lot of people think university is full of wankers.

TAFE has accumulated it's reputation as the "dumber" option because most of the dropkicks from the low-end of the school picking order tend to drop out and go there to get an HSC eq. or do some other course. These people fit into the "dumb" section, as they have no personal motivation. I feel sorry for some, because it is obvious they have no self esteem.

BUT, TAFE is not in any way for the dumb. Uni and TAFE deal in different sections, they do not compete. TAFE works in the Certificate (Cert. I - B.A. Degree) system, which can allow you to get out to your chosen industry quicker. TAFE also offers qualifications for industries not offered in Uni. These courses may seem "dumber" than those offered in Uni, but truth is (proved in thts thread), that some of these industires earn alot more than alot of Uni courses.

Also, did you ever think that the people in these positions actually WANT to do these supposedly "dumb" jobs? Most people do Hospitality, Hairdressing, Plumbing, Building, Cleaning, Hairdressing, etc. because they ENJOY doing it. Yes, I use that word, they ACTUALLY do ENJOY doing it.

The septic tank cleaners were probably those bottom-feeders that dropped out. Shows what going to TAFE early in life with no intention of studying gets you... Ironically though, some of them make an incredible amount of money.

These bottom-feeders are usually eliminated when you reach the higher level qualifications, and the older (class population) aged classes.

Don't rule out TAFE because it's what you have been taught, in an eletist highschool or anywhere else or by anyone else. There is life beyond highschool.

Keep your mind open to all options (or open it), otherwise you'll miss out on some things you may regret.

Is uni for self-absorbed wankers, with no understanding of the real world?
