I've recently been obsessed with Japanese movies, from the likes of Hideo Nakata who did The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water; and Akira Kurosawa the giant of foreign film making in the time of Speilberg, Coppola, and Lucas' early years. If you don't know, the American Movie "The Magnificent Seven" was a remake of Kurosawa's classic "The Seven Samurai". And the characters of "The Hidden Fortress" inspired George Lucas to create similar bickering characters R2D2 and C3PO in Star Wars. I was talking with a friend the other day and he said all Japanese movies are concerned with war. I think that is a generalisation. There are far more violent movies in Hollywood proportional to Japan. Does anyone else think so too?

The Japanese have a cool way with horror. You really have to understand their traditions and beliefs before you can feel really scared. But yeah, I get scared. I think i like it better because there's also not so much an emphasis on guts and gore.

Western horror, to me, is a bit too routine. Out of all english horrors i've seen, the original 'Village of the Damned' was the best!

Yeah they do have other genres, a hell of a lot actually, and like whiterabbit said, unlike the west, a lot of things in eastern cultures is implicit and you really need to read a lot into things :)

Quentin Tarantino does that to death in Kill Bill. Anytime anything is cut off, and hence a neverending stream of blood spraying everywhere. It becomes very funny after a while.

If you're fascinated by japanese movies, you really must not go past "Battle Royale" which is although not full horror, the theme of it is very good, won't tell you much since that i don't want to ruin it for you.

Other great japanese films that i've enjoyed are The Ring, and some other one i don't remember...to be honest...the grudge was pretty shit...

Never seen the Grudge.. Yeh I've heard of Battle Royale but haven't been able to find it. I wanna see the godzilla movies. They're 50 years old and more than 20 movies on and still going, better than bond.

I haven't seen the Gozilla movies before...but one another movie you should look into is "Suicide Club" which really depicts the suicidal culture of Japan but off course a bit to the extremes...

most recent jap horror is incredibly overrated, esp. all of hideo nakata's stuff; it's all just so watered down similar to western horror films IMO.

audition is pretty brilliant tho, as is most of takashi miike's stuff (a bit samey, but still good.. check out visitor q)

takeshi kitano as well, especially violent cop and hana-bi.

kurosawa is amazing as everyone knows, but don't overlook his noirs (the bad sleep well, stray dog, high and low) in favour of his samurai films.

other good stuff: sansho the bailiff, vengeance is mine, tokyo story, oldboy, all miyazaki films... uhh...

Haha 'Battle Royale' is gold. How funny is the introductory tape with the overenthusiastic girl? Although the ending is a bit confusing.

Yeah haha that girl was hilarious!

Too bad there's no real battle royale. I'd love to murder lots of people! :chainsaw:

Good Japanese movies to watch for everyone:

The Ring
Dark Water
Grave of the Fireflies (anime)
Oceanwaves (anime)
Porco Rosso (anime)
Battle Royale
Hana-bi
Audition
Ikiru

Seven Samurai imo, is extremely overrated. I was bored to tears watching it. To be quite honest I found The Magnificent Seven to be a huge improvement.

simpsons quote, yo.

anyway, i just don't know how anyone can find seven samurai boring. it's easily the most consistently engaging 3-plus hour film i've seen, and it has endless replay value.

ran, on the other hand, i find pretty tedious in places though it's rewarding in the end.
