Is anyone taking on this combined degree?
What majors are u guys taking?

1. will someone be able to cope with 2 majors in Commerce (accounting&finance) and 1 major in Science(adv) (financial mathematics)?

2. how do u guys perceive your future? (science and commerce are not quite 'related' unless choosing a major in financial mathematics)

3. for science students majoring in financial maths.. do u regret not doing actuarial studies? since it's more specialised..

Yes, that is possible. Just remember you can do a math major, and do the actuarial exams later. Just wont get as many exemptions.

whats financial mathematics? is it similar to actuarial studies? just not as challenging??? is the drop out rate as high as actuarial studies?

Financial maths and stats is a major intended for people who could only have one science major as part of the degree, and allows them to study a mix of stats and financial mathematics towards the one major, rather than having to choose between maths or stats.

Basically, you just do your 3rd year financial maths unit math3975, 2 first semester stats and one other unit from a particular list (such as another stats unit in 2nd sem, PDE's, Info and Coding Theory and that's what I can recall off the top of my head).

The financial maths unit focusses on arbitrage, pricing of securities, option trading, binomial model and then the Black-Scholes framework for pricing options.

Not as challenging? Depends, I don't know what actuarial stuff is like, I find that kind of stuff to be boring honestly. Well, it's as challenging as getting through 3 years of maths and stats.

Do I regret not doing actuarial? Well I prefer to study maths as is and not as some tool to solve problems in one particular field, so no.

Note: I'm doing 2 majors in math and stats, so I'm covering what's needed for a financial maths major anyway.

You can still do it as 1 major in a bsc degree. (if you have another major also)

Why bother? Just do the 3 year BComm and you'll have similar job prospects.

1) im working towards that goal right now (sci: chem, comm: finan + econ or econmtrx)

2) either find a cure for HIV or working in some finance film (flexible)

3) NEVER, i'd never go to UNSW or macq... not even if it means i get shitty pay....

lol i was tossing between maths and chem... and in the last min, i choose chem... maths are full of freakish ppl (tom, julian, nick to name a few) and i feel i'd be so smashed if i was to do math... so i choose chem (well at least ppl do chem i can associate more with ...
