Beazley quit has leader. He is still an MP on the back bench. Caucus can voter him back as leader at any time.

Latham is quitting as leader and also as the member for Werriwa. This means he will not be a member of parliament.

i see. ta! so its more that he wanted a break than quit as in retire from politics. ok i think i get it now.

I'm no expert at economics. However if that is the case the Liberals will have betrayed the trust of the Australia people. If the economy takes a massive dive and Australians place the blame on the Howard/ Liberal government it would damage the chances of any future Libreal party candidate. Simply because the Liberals run on the idea of economic credibility and nothing else at all.

Just imagine what would have happened if Labor had won the election. The reputation of Labor recessions would have been made worse. That's why I'm slightly glad that Labor lost. It's been predicted that whoever won the recent US election would not win for the next 100 years, and it wont be too different in Australia.

Yes i agree, Gillard did very well throughout the election campaign, Latham couldnt hold it together though unfortunately.

He held it together well? Labor got absolutely smashed in the election campaign. They really need a overhaul of their campaign strategies. Too many mistakes.

oh thank god lathom has quit. i would much rather beasly as PM than Latham. rudd however not as much. but id have a much harder choice chosing between howard and beasly than latham and howard. i still prefer howard though

I dont think Labor got smashed. Labor did as expected....They won 38% of the vote. They basically went nowhere.

The 8% or so that went Green were a result of Labor voters going green.

ALP needed better advertising and maybe Bob Hawke (who in about a 10 seconds TV grab managed to score points against Howard) when LAtham couldnt land a blow.

You have to question though why they went nowhere. It sure wasnt because of a lack of political fodder that could have been used against the Libs. They just didnt exploit those sort of things (ie. Children over-board, leadership change) like the Libs exploited the Labor problems (economy etc.). They also did a horrible job at justifying their economic policies (signing the cardboard IR thing) when if they had debated instead that 1. IR are determined by the RBA and 2. The economic position of Australia is much different to that of when Labor was in leadership, they could have scored a few more points. Basically it was mistakes like that that ended up costing a number of seats in the end.

well choke. i hardly knew anyone in my year who supported liberal. most people our age prefer labor now cause they hate howard .its not so much they support labor though. its more the just wanted howard out

Kevin Rudd - Difficult day for Mark, wish him well (health and future), important time for the party, will consult with colleagues, aid package discussions, today it's important that we send good wishes to mark latham, as for myself I will be consulting with those in the party in the days ahead to determine his course of action.

oh well. im not really a supporter of any party. howard just gets my vote purely cause i have to chose who i think is less of a dick. but latham i was honestly scared of. beazley i dont mind so much but once latham got in as leader i took a stronger level of liberal support

1. Australian people are quite redneckish. They simply dont give a shit about boat people. Some in my first year politics tut suggested (under their breath) that the boast should be blown up. No one cares.

If they were to over-emotionalise it then im sure they could have gotten more people to care. Youre right about the redneck thing though.

Agreed. Probably should have been more of an emphasis on what Labor could do, rather than what Liberal could not. I think a generally more positive rhetoric may have worked in their favour as opposed to mud-slinging.
