"I'm certainly not in a position to confirm that," Mr Scipione replied.
"Now is not the time to second guess or speculate. This is a critical incident. We will go through this investigation. We need to get it right."
He also would not say whether the hostages were shot by the gunman, or whether they were caught in the crossfire.
"As a result of an exchange of gunfire inside that premises, police moved in and at this stage, as I've indicated, we have a number of people that ware injured and certainly we're working through that as part of the critical incident."

3:55am: SMH crime reporter Emma Partridge has been outside the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital at Camperdown.
She reports: One woman, believed to be a hostage was seen being wheeled into RPA on a stretcher just after 3.30am.
Four ambulances were parked in the emergency department bays.
4:22am: A number of hostages are still being treated at Martin Place while the most seriously injured have been taken to hospital, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.
"We are treating a number of patients and it is still very active in the city at the moment," the spokeswoman said.
"We are treating and transporting patients to inner city hospitals as required," she said.
There are more than 14 specialist and general paramedic crews in the CBD.

Trains and buses into Sydney's CBD continue to operate, with some changes.
All train lines and stations are operating as normal, other than trains on the T4 Eastern Suburbs Line, which are not stopping at Martin Place.
All bus services are operating along normal corridors with the following exceptions:
City-bound express bus services that operate via the Eastern Distributor will use the Eastern Distributor, William Street, College Street, St James Road and Elizabeth Street to Liverpool Street.
Route 200 bus services will operate to North Sydney via Park Street, Druitt Street, Clarence Street and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Route 200 bus services will operate to Bondi Junction via the Sydney Harbour Bridge, York Street, Druitt Street and Park Street.
CDC/Hillsbus route 620, 650 and 642 bus services that operate via the Cahill Expressway will use Grosvenor Street, George Street and Market Street.
Ferry and light rail services are operating as normal.

'It's been very difficult'
A man has thanked emergency services after learning his loved one had survived the Martin Place siege, reports Emma Partridge.
"I think all the emergency services have done a really good job and been really supportive," he said.
"It's been very distressing for everybody. It's been very difficult."
The man was one of at least a dozen family members seen leaving a court house at St James to be reunited with relatives just after 5am.

Commissioner Scipione said highly trained police made the decision to enter the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in the early hours of Tuesday morning to save lives after they heard gunshots ring out inside the cafe.
"They made the call because they believed that at that time, that if they didn't enter, there would have been many more lives lost," he said.
"I think events that were unfolding inside the premises led them to the belief that now was the time to actually deploy, and they did.
"At this stage I understand there was a number of gunshots that were heard, which caused officers to move straight to a what we call an EA, an emergency action plan, and that caused them to enter."

17 hostages were held inside the cafe
NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione confirmed that 17 hostages were held inside the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Martin Place.
Two of those hostages were killed. They are a man, aged 34, and a woman, aged 38.
The "lone gunman" was shot dead, Mr Scipione said. He has been identified as Man Haron Monis.

A male police officer was shot in the face, but is expected to recover. The injured hostages were taken to hospital with a range of injuries.

"Unbelievably overnight we have lost some of our own in an attack we never thought we would see here in our city," Mr Baird said.

Fairfax Media can confirm that three people are dead following the siege in Sydney's Martin Place.
The gunman, Man Haron Monis, was pronouced dead after being taken to hospital, reports Nick Ralston.
Another man, aged 34, and a woman, aged 38, were pronounced dead also after being taken to hospital.
A total of four injured people have been taken to hospital, while another person was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Those taken to hospital are:
Two women with non life-threatening injuries.
Another woman was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to her shoulder,
A male police officer , who suffered a non life-threatening wound to his face from gunshot pellets.
And a 35-year-old woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.

19.09 The police won't comment on some reports that the gunman had fallen asleep and that's why they moved in. If their claim that he was shooting in the moments before they entered is true, it seems that he can't have been sleeping.
19.05 The police are indicating that they moved in because the gunman opened fire inside of the cafe. Here's what Commissioner Scipione said:

Road diversion remain in place this morning - Martin Place

Police will continue to maintain a perimeter around a cafe at the corner of Martin Place and Philip streets this morning.
Traffic and Highway Patrol police have cordoned off parts of Hunter, King, Phillip and Elizabeth streets.
• Elizabeth Street between Hunter and King Streets – closed to all traffic
• Elizabeth Street – northbound between Market and King Street – closed to all traffic
• Phillip Street – between King and Hunter Streets – closed to all traffic
• King Street – between Elizabeth and Phillip Streets – closed to all traffic
• Macquarie Street – between St James Road and Hunter Street – closed to all traffic
Bus services will run according to regular schedules, although some routes will be diverted around the affected area.
Train services will operate normally although Martin Place station remains closed.
People intending to travel to the Sydney CBD, away from the cordoned off area are advised, to go ahead with their plans.
Those affected by the operation are advised to contact their employers, monitor media reports and seek advice via the NSW Police website and social media platforms.

Here is a small round up of the Australian newspapers and their front pages this morning.
The Sydney Morning Herald has the headline “Terror Hits Home” and leads their main story with “a man brandishing a gun and an Islamic flag”. The paper has 12 pages of coverage of the siege including a story headlined “Hallmarks of ‘lone wolf’ attack say experts” which seems to have been proved correct this morning by the NSW police commissioner, Andrew Scipione, who says the gunman was acting alone.
The Australian has the headline “Hostages’ night of horror’ and describes Man Haron Monis as an “Iranian self styled sheik”. An analysis written by Greg Bearup says “this may all turn out to be more lone nut case, than lone wolf, but this man provided a template for others more radical, and more able, to follow”.
The Daily Telegraph has the headline “Evil Strikes Our Hearts” and names Man Haron Monis as a “self-styled sheik and Islamic State preacher”. The newspaper has 16 pages dedicated to the coverage with a banner at the top reading “Sydney Under Siege”. The paper carries a report detailing a phone call from a 19-year-old hostage to the Daily Telegraph newsroom. The report says “This was an attack by the Islamic State. This was a lone wolf attack by a supporter or sympathiser of the evil Islamic terror group that had waged war with humanity”.
The Australian Financial Review has the headline “Islamic State-linked terror grips Sydney” and leads their story with “A gunman sympathetic to Islamic State” but notes he does not fit the typical profile of a young Islamic State-inspired radical.

Look at the last guy, more than 10 seconds to pull out and throw a flash grenade and almost dropping it?? Are you kidding me? How unprofessional are NSW SWAT? it's takes half a second in COD.
That bit about sleeping is wrong. He wasn't sleeping. What he was trying to do was to separate the hostages into two groups, but he wasn't able to do it by himself. It would have worked better if he had accomplices to help him.
One of the groups decided to escape and that's when he panicked and started to shoot the other group. And that is when police decided to go in to stop it.

It doesn't say the gun man slept. There were unsubstantiated rumours? I can't see any claims the gun man actually slept in the newspaper articles/snippets I posted?
