'Math' is only used by those who have for so long argued the case that it is and always was 'Math', and then finally saw the 's' hanging at the end of the word 'Mathematics' that it actually stemmed from. Yet by some vain desire to prove they are all-knowing and faultless, still choose to live in ignorance.

Firstly, maths as someone has already stated is an abbreviation of mathematicS.
No one says "I will study mathematic"

Secondly, a more personal issue is speech. 'Maths' rolls of the tongue better than 'math'.
