12 isnt D, it's B. "...treated with a NEW drug". How can "pathogens present that the start of treatment" be resistant to a NEW drug?

LOL 12 cant be B it doesnt make sense!!

there is variation in pathogens...some may have been resistant before the drug, thats possible

4. Which process involves detecting changes from a stable state then counteracting these changes?

Answer: B - Homeostasis.

5. Why are polio vaccinations effective?

Answer: C - Memory B Cells remember the toxin and provide a rapid respnse if infected by the polio virus.

6. ...is waaay too long. It asks which is the correct conclusion.

Answer: D - Its temperature and metabolism increased when the cage temperature increased --> The animal is an ectotherm. C could potentially also be true, but as an endothermic animals temp/metabolism would not increase, we can assume that the D has the correct observation, and is therefore correct.

7. Which processes result in genetic variation of offspring?

Answer: A - DNA mutation and gamete formation.

8. Some students want to determine if the colour of light affects plant growth. Which of the following is a suitable hypothesis to be tested by the students?

Answer: C - Pea Plants will grow taller in red light than in blue light.

9. What is the role of antigens in the body's defence against disease?

Answer: B - They trigger the immune response (I got this wrong ;_;)

10. Which scientist improved the understanding of the immune response?

Answer: B - Frank Macfarlane Burnet

It doesn't say the drugs weren't anti-inflammatory, which would have suppressed the inflammation response, so it's B. Case closed.

im still sure its D
Yeah, it's D. The answer B- 'decrease in inflammation allowed pathogens to become resistant' assumes that individual pathogens change and 'become resistant'.
The bacteria become resistant because of natural selection. Any ones that are resistant survive and reproduce. So D is correct.

Wooo 15/15!!!

wrong. to quote my earlier post:

natural resistance through natural selection. variation in a population causes some to be resistant, then they survive and reproduce. if they didn't stuff like golden staff wouldn't exist because the first ones would have been killed by antibiotics.

The rest of the questions are
8) Some students want to determine if the colour of light affects plant growth.
which of the following is a suitable hypothesis to be tested by the students?
A) all plants will grow better in red light
B) all plants will grow bigger flowers in sunlight
C) Pea plants will grow taller in red light than in blue light
D) Pea plants will grow faster than bean plants in coloured light

9) What is the Role of antigens in the body's defence against disease?
A) they bind to invading pathogens
B) they trigger the immune response
C) they inactivate invading anitbodies
D) they supress the inflammation response

10) Which scientist improved the understanding of the immune response
A) George Beadle
B) Frank Macfarlane Burnet
C) Robert Koch
D) Walter Sutton

11) What finding from the study of coomparative emryology supports the theory of evolution?
A)Embryos are easily fossilised
B) the embryos of fish and mammals looks very similar
C) the dominant chromosomes are passed onto embryos
D) mutation in gametes is common and this leads to different embryos

12) after an infection was treated with a new drug, inflammation decreased. in a few patients, inflammation returned after one week. In these patients the pathogens causing the infection were shown to be resistant to the drug
what conclusion can be drawn from these observations?
A) these patients developed resistance to the drug
B) the decrease in inflammation allowed the pathogens to become resitant to the drug
C) the white blood cells were not functioning properly and therefore the inflammation returned
D) a few pathogens resistant to the drugs were present at the start of the treatment and natural selection increased their numbers

13) what does mitosis produce to assist in the maintenance of health
A)Gametes to ensure reproduction
B) Polypeptides to ensure cell growth
C)prions to protect cells against cancer
D) cells to replace those that are damaged

14) What is the most important difference between active and passive transport
A) Active transport requires energy input, passive transoprt does not
B) active transport occurs in animals, paasive only occurs in plants
C) active transport does not use membranes, passive transport always does
D) active transport occurs whenever an organism moves, passive transport does not involve the movement of the organism

Question 15 is a pedigree question with the diagram sorry.. but the answer is defiently C

Hey for Q6, why isnt it C?? If the temperature was less that the cage, it is controlling tis temp by homeostasis and is therefore an endotherm ... right?

Isn't this exactly what survival of the fittest is all about?

Bugs are sprayed with pesticide, 95% die, and 5% have a resistance to it that was ingrained in their system.

Those 5% pass on their genetic structure and then when they are sprayed next time only 10% die or so

Is 6 c?

I hope so, then 14/15.

Did most people agree it was or wasn't?

I thought we agreed it was D? Well I can't see how it'd be C.

Because if you say, the temp of the organism is less than the cage - how can you conclude that it's an endotherm over an ectotherm?
