Its not that I thought it didn't make a point, on the contrary I think that too often it tried to give both sides of a conflict, to appear evenhanded, while still maintaining a meditation on how one dimensional that conflict is.

rather than condemning both parties, Spielberg could have remained impassive, letting the audience come to the conclusion that within the cycle of violence itself there is no guiltless party. Instead, he thrust it down the throats of the audience.
i think it's worth remembering that spielberg is a jew, of course, and that he has to be clear with the material lest he be labelled partisan (he's a pretty mainstream figure).

i must say, for a spielberg movie I thought it was pretty restrained. it worked in its favour

I thought Daniel Craig was excellent in it. Scenestealer, for me.
really? i mean, his 70's clothes were cool, but otherwise he was fairly unmemorable, especially in a cast packed with great foreign actors - mathieu almaric, matthieu kassovitz, michael lonsdale... geoffrey rush was good too.

seriously i wish i already knew you so we could frolic to the movies all the time.

i want to see jarhead

i hear its kinda satirical, apparently everyone who wanted to see action packed deaths and explosions walked out disappointed but smarter in the end. and the american folk didnt like it.

i love that idea.

Really? When I first heard about Jarhead it was one of the movies I looked forward to most. It's received very mixed reviews from my trusted sources though, so I'm feeling a bit sceptical. I'm not so eager to see it that I'll download it before its release anyway :D

I'm looking forward to Jarhead too, i'll go see it when it comes out
the criticisms i saw levelled at the movie was similar to Road to Perdition
Mendes is too theatrical and self conscious.

Jarhead seems to be a comical interpretation of the Iraq War - probably didnt fit with all those Republicans over there.
That's Three Kings. Jarhead looks like biting satire. And naturally, I can't wait. I love Mendes. American Beauty is one of my all-time favourite American films. Road to Perdition was good, visually amazing, but not exceptional. Jarhead looks to be a film right up my alley.

Also on Munich - very good film. Probably Spielberg's only effort I have walked out of thinking "damn, that's a good film". It's a definite turn for him, and I hope he keeps it up. Kushner is a remarkable writer, and did an excellent job. The editing was also amazing (solid editing is something I don't often notice) - both technically and stylistically. Sound was well mixed too.

id just like to add what a thoroughly enjoyable film this is...the only thing that worried me is when bana's character is having flashbacks while having sex with his wife

so harshly odd, but i cant put my finger on it why it bothered me

glad to see you enjoyed it - as the board's spielberg cynic :p

i reckon mendes can work with good material. AB is good and road to perdition works at moments, when it isn't ponderous

Haha yes. I was extremely shocked that I walked away with such a satisfied smile on my face. My old man came along with me, and as soon as we left he blurted out "I thought you hated Spielberg!" Pretty funny. :)

But yeah - Alan Ball wrote an amazing screenplay for American Beauty and Road to Perdition didn't have anywhere near as high quality material, which was reflected in its meandering nature (still conrad hall's photography kept me gripped, shame he's dead). I just hope Swofford's book isn't as whiney as I've read it is. Should be good tho - solid cast of young actors too.

that was the most uncomfortable sex scene i've ever witnessed. and i've witnessed myself have sex and its still worst.

theres soemthing seriously bizarre about going between executions and a gun battle and a sex scene thats just....not right.
amazingly well done otherwise, imo

The sex scene seems to be getting alot of press lately - am I to imagine that it really is that bad?
It's not bad, it's just not like anything I've seen before. And it's not graphic at all, it's just edited between some very confronting scenes. It's a very, very well edited scene but will be discomforting for the more conservative viewers.
