Hi guys I'm posting this thread in response to a greater debate that's been raging within the BoS community, which I won't mention in order to keep results as objective as possible.

So in order to help me out could you please answer the following few questions:

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

Thanks so much, your help is greatly appreciated.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?
No, and nor should it ever be.

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?
Yes, as much as he thinks is necessary to "have a good time" - One tablet, or at least half. It's a very minute proportion.

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?
No. Good reason why it's still an illegal drug. Only some choose to be ignorant of the rising ecstasy issue, where ignorace equals blind acceptance.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
No, and never. It is beyond irresponsible, naïve and dangerous.

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?
Yes, I dont see it as something radical or outrageous to do, to me its indifferent to say alcohol consumption

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?
yes, probably half of them have tried it and a bit less than a quarter do it on a consistant basis

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?
no, the immediate dangers and social consequences of ecstasy are blown completely and unreasonably out of proportion, making it a kind of taboo thing to do.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
Yes, i believe its a personal choice for people to make, as long as they read up on it first and know what they're doing.

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?
There's this one guy . . . :haha:

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?
Among most youths, probably.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
No ; not because its illegal (because a lot of the things we do are actually considered "illegal") but it puts ones life at great risk.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?
Yes. It's practically everywhere in Sydney.

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?
Probably about a third, a bit less maybe? Only a handful of my school friends do, really, as a lot of them are terrified that pills = death. Most of my older friends do, though.

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?
Not particularly, no.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
Yes, I do.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?
hmm. it's not normal, but it's not weird either?

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?
i know plenty of people who do. but of my social circle.. about 20%

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?
if you're into that whole partying/drugs/alcohol scene, then it shouldn't be anything too odd and most are fairly accepting of it. outside of this group, however, i don't think so.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
not really, but i don't care who does it.

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?
No. Brushing your teeth is normal. Taking a shower is normal. Popping pills or doing lines is not.

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?
Yes. Quite a few. Have had many offers, although have turned them down on the basis that i'm just not interested. Nothing more than that, nothing less.

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?

No. My perception is that to society, illicit drugs offer no tangible benefits and instead only have the potential to kill.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
Each to their own. I'm not keen on them though.

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?

Not to myself as such, in different social circles probably.

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?

yeah i do, probably around 5%

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?

i think the youth are more accepting than other age genders.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?

not really. I dont mind if others do it though.

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?

Yes. It is much more socially accepted than not.

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?

Yes. I'd say about 60% of my close circle of my close circle of friends do. On nights where they do chose to take ecstasy, they will not invite those who choose not to drop. And in these nights out, you are guaranteed to meet plenty of people on pills in any club.

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?

Society as a whole, no. Media scare tactics and such seem to drive down the point if you even think about taking drugs you or someone you love will die.

However with my particular age group, no. Those who have experienced it, tend to be pro use, and have a more realistic perspective on the effects of ecstasy on the users behaviour/ health. And I believe ecstasy is just quiet a popular trend at present.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?

Absolutely. As long as it is my body, I chose to have the right to do with it what I will. Freedom of choice. As long as men are smoking, and alcoholics drinking I believe in my right to use ecstasy.

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

1) Do you consider taking ecstasy to be a normal behaviour?
No. What kind of fucked up loser would take any drugs at all ever?

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion? No. If I did I would bottle the cunt so quick eh

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?
Unfortunately yes, society has broken down and been led astray by "scientists" and their chemicals

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
Definitely not.

As normal as smoking or drinking.

2) Within your social circles, do you know of anybody who takes ecstasy? If so, what proportion?
Most people I know in my dorm take it when its offered. Only about 5 of them take it semi-regularly. They take 1 tab.

My sister's friends, who I also hang out with sometimes, take it fairly regularly (like once a week). I don't know how much they take, but I think it's only 1.

3) Do you think society is accepting of ecstasy use in general?
I'm sure the oldies and religious nutters don't accept it, but they aren't society in general.

I'd say society 'in general' frowns upon it like they do binge drinking, and smoking. Young people are far more nonchalant about it.

4) Do you personally believe it is an acceptable practise?
As long as it's not more than once a week or more than a tab. Considering it's safer than alcohol, it fits that I am as concerned about it's use as I am alcohol (nobody likes an addict of anything, but you don't ban alcohol because a small amount harm themselves on it or get addicted to it).

5) Finally, could you please tell me your age and sex, and what you do.

As an amatuer sociologist, I can tell you that if your aim was to be objective, you didn't do a very good job wording some of these questions.

Normal is a vague concept that needs context. What does normal even mean? Taking ecstasy when, where, in what setting and at what dosage? Is it desireable to be normal? Seems slightly loaded, normal being perceived as "good and proper" and these things are all relative.

Normal to who? Normal is a relative value. It's not normal for a grandma to sink a bunch of beers on a Friday night, but it's sure as hell normal for an average young thing out on the town.

By 'normal' are we supposed to read it as common or acceptable or both or something else?

A better phrasing would perhaps be something like-
"Do you believe recreational use of ecstasy once a month or greater is an acceptable behaviour among your peer group".

Phrasing "if so, what proportion?" is apparently broken because some took it to mean "what proportion of your peer group use ecstasy", while others i.e. Kristy Xx managed to read it as something like " what dosage to they use.

In reference to the other thread, I don't think anyone was claiming this, and a homogenous society is a myth, it does not exist, what we have is a mix of cultures, demographics and trends. It doesn't matter what this "society" thinks, what matters is what the peer group and social world which I exist in thinks.

Basically, Jezzmo, in his pisstaking way, said everything better than I ever could with half the words.
