I reckon all cigarettes should be shaped like little penises.

Like those straws

If it wasn't for public health measures like this, millions of people would be dead.
And? People would be dead because they are stupid.

I think it's a good thing. Cull population growth by giving people the freedom to kill themselves. Kill two birds with one stone.

plain packaging is up there with seatbelts and food labelling as some of the most serious human rights violations of our time
I just realised the sarcasm in that. However there is a point to be made here.

Yeah that's pretty fucking stupid. But I daresay the government will legislate it anyway. I suspect there will be bipartisan support, which is sad because anyone who thinks it will work is retarded, and they happen to be running the fucking country. And banning them will make it even worse.

Why do we make a big fucking issue out of other people being stupid? Why can't we leave smokers alone to self destruction as they please? Why do we have to trample on people's freedoms and rights as people to do what we want with ourselves?

I said on the drinking thread that we need to educate people, instead of creating laws against drinking, and the same goes for smoking, drugs, or any other self destructive behaviour. We need to create education programs (especially in schools) to present the facts to people about many self destructive behaviours, and then they have the information to make a choice. Their choice is not our concern, or responsibility to change. If we make it well known that cigarettes will kill you, and people choose to ignore that fact, then that's their own fault and we should just let them die.

It's not even a fucking issue.

They be taking up all the hospital beds instead of people who are actually there for reasons other than being stupid enough to smoke excessively

True, but what im saying is that people smoking and getting sick for it does have effects on people other than themselves, so its not like we can just let them die and not care

Some people were arguing that people dying of smoking is actually cheaper than if they die decades later of ageing related diseases etc.

Not smoking just offsets the health care costs a few decades. I guess you might lose productive capacity though if people get ill before retirement age.

if it was then there would be no problem

You could quite easily argue that smokers deliberately harm themselves out of negligence, and you could force them to pay for their own treatment, before or after said treatment. They make the choice and they shouldn't expect everyone else to bend over backwards to fix them, I agree.

But what annoys me about this is that no one ever brings this up. People who always advocate "banning smoking" or at least intervening to try and stop smoking always say "it's dangerous", and "X amount of people die every year from smoking" and "it's addictive" and so on. The ONLY valid argument I could see is the one about free healthcare, like you are all saying. And there are ways around that if people would bring it into the spotlight.

It's the only sensible reason I could understand all this fuss about, and no one ever talks about it.

- eating anything from the multitude of known foods that increase cancer risk factors
- being overweight
- playing sport
- being pregnant
- going into the sun
- being injured doing physical activity
- drinking alcohol/any drug
- working in the multitude of industries that utilise known carcinogens

all deliberately harming themselves

wait add ever touching petrol etc to that
